The East African Community (EAC) has the following objectives:
- To promote political, economic, and social cooperation among the member states for the benefit of their people.
- To reduce poverty among citizens of the member states.
- To strengthen peace, defense, and security.
- To promote gender equality.
- To build good relations between the government and the private sector.
- To promote the sustainable use of natural resources found in the member states.
The EAC has two main types of operating organs: those which make decisions and those which implement the decisions.
- General Assembly:
The General Assembly of heads of state is the major decision-making organ of the Community. This assembly decides on issues related to policy and the daily functioning of the Community. The General Assembly is held once a year, and during each assembly, the chairperson of the Community is chosen on a rotational basis. For example, in 2016, President John Joseph Magufuli was chosen as the chairperson for one year. - Council of Ministers:
The Council of Ministers meets twice a year, with one meeting preceding the General Assembly to prepare for the heads of state meeting. The Council links the General Assembly with the daily operations of the Community. - EAC Legislative Assembly (EALA):
The EAC Legislative Assembly consists of 27 parliamentarians from the national parliaments of the member states. It makes the laws that guide the daily functioning of the Community and approves the annual budget.
- Secretariat:
The Secretariat is the permanent organ responsible for carrying out the daily functions of the Community. - EAC Court of Justice:
The EAC Court of Justice administers justice on issues within the Community, such as hearing cases brought to its attention. - Sectoral Committees:
The Sectoral Committees interpret and implement the decisions of the Council of Ministers for each sector. They also develop programs and supervise their implementation.
