Pollution
Pollution refers to the introduction of harmful substances or energy into the environment, which adversely affects living organisms, ecosystems, and natural resources. The environment encompasses land, water, air, and the living organisms that depend on these elements for survival.
The substances or elements that cause pollution are known as pollutants. These pollutants can be in solid, liquid, or gaseous forms and may originate from natural sources (e.g., volcanic eruptions) or human activities (e.g., industrial waste, vehicular emissions, and deforestation).
Pollutants can have both direct effects (e.g., poisoning of aquatic life) and indirect effects (e.g., climate change due to greenhouse gases).
Types of pollution
There are three types of pollution:
- Terrestrial pollution
- Air pollution
- Water pollution
The importance of understanding pollution
Understanding pollution is crucial because:
- It affects human health and ecosystems directly.
- It threatens the balance of natural processes, such as the water cycle and photosynthesis.
- Addressing pollution helps ensure a sustainable future for all living organisms.
