Air pollution

Air pollution is the introduction of harmful substances into the atmosphere. The atmosphere is the layer of air surrounding the Earth.

Human activities that cause air pollution

1. Industrial activities: Industries emit fumes and gases like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides into the atmosphere.
2. Automobiles and heavy machinery: Cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships release exhaust gases into the atmosphere.
3. Burning of fuels: Heating processes and fuel burning release gases, smoke, fumes, and soot into the atmosphere.
4. Bush fires: Bushfires emit clouds of smoke and gases into the atmosphere.
5. Construction activities: Road construction, quarrying, and building construction can release particles into the atmosphere.
6. Agricultural activities: Digging, ploughing fields, and spraying insecticides and weed killers contribute to air pollution with gaseous chemicals and dust.
7. Mining activities: Mining operations release dust and gases into the atmosphere.
8. Nuclear weapons testing and nuclear reactors: Nuclear tests and accidents release radioactive materials into the atmosphere.
9. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): Leaking from refrigerators, air conditioners, cleaners, and propellants, CFCs pollute the atmosphere.

Hazards caused by air pollution

1. Air pollution can lead to diseases affecting the lungs and heart.
2. Smog reduces visibility, making activities like driving and flying dangerous.
3. Pollutant gases and dust create choking and irritant smells, making people and animals uncomfortable.
4. Gases like carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide dissolve in rainwater, forming acidic rain. Acid rain can damage forests and buildings.
5. Smoke and dust that settle on leaves block the stomata, affecting air exchange in plants.
6. Smoke and fumes hanging in the atmosphere may reduce solar energy in ecosystems.
7. Poisonous dust and radioactive materials can settle on crops, which are consumed by humans and animals, potentially causing cancer.
8. Greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere, reflecting heat radiation back to Earth and contributing to global warming.
9. Gases like nitrogen oxides and CFCs contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere.

Methods of preventing air pollution

1. Use alternative energy sources like solar energy, tidal power, geothermal energy, hydroelectric power, and wind energy instead of fossil fuels.
2. Reduce the number of small automobiles and encourage mass commuter systems like trains and buses, especially in urban areas.
3. Smoky vehicles and industries that emit high levels of pollutants should be banned from operating.
4. Discourage the use of aerosol insecticides and other harmful chemicals.
5. Install air pollution control devices (scrubbers) in industrial plants, motor vehicles, and other places where pollutants are produced in large quantities.
6. Design industrial processes to allow the recycling of unreacted gases.
7. The government should enforce laws that prevent the import of used automobiles and refrigerators that are highly pollutant.
8. Pass laws to allow the import and use of unleaded petrol and low sulfur diesel fuels.

Ways of protecting industrial workers from pollution

Industrial workers are often exposed to chemical reagents that can lead to various illnesses and disorders. Chemicals enter their bodies through inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion. Safety measures can minimize the effects of industrial chemicals:

1. Eliminate or substitute hazardous raw materials and chemicals in chemical processes with non-hazardous alternatives.
2. Toxic or radioactive chemical processes should be carried out in sealed, leak-proof chambers to prevent harmful substances from escaping into the environment.
3. Provide workers with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, earmuffs, shoes, respiratory plugs, helmets, aprons, and overalls.
4. Ensure workers receive training on how to use PPE effectively.
5. Seek immediate medical attention if a worker is exposed to hazardous materials.
