Characteristics of fertile soil

1. Rich in basic plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
2. Contains sufficient minerals.

4. Contains organic matter that improves structure and moisture retention.
5. Has a large amount of topsoil.
6. Exhibits good soil structure.

Soil productivity

Soil productivity refers to the soil's ability to provide water and nutrients while allowing deep rooting of agricultural plants. Key soil characteristics and indicators such as texture, depth, organic matter, and fertility influence productivity. The measure of productivity is often crop yield per millimeter of available water.

Fertile soil is not necessarily productive

While fertile soil contains essential nutrients, certain factors may limit its productivity:

1. Leaching: The downward movement of mineral salts away from plant roots, often caused by waterlogging, reduces soil fertility.
2. Waterlogging: Excess water accumulation in the soil pushes mineral salts downward, leaving the topsoil nutrient-deficient.
3. Climate: Poor climatic conditions, such as prolonged dryness, can reduce productivity despite fertile soil. Adequate rainfall promotes plant growth and productivity.
4. Lack of certain minerals: If a specific mineral required by plants is missing, productivity declines even in fertile soil.
5. Type of crop: Planting unsuitable crops for a particular soil type reduces productivity.
6. Soil structure: Poor soil structure limits aeration and water movement, affecting productivity.

Ways to maintain soil fertility
