Describing Future Events in Arabic
In Arabic, we use the future tense to talk about things that will happen later — tomorrow, next week, or in the future. We add a small letter called سِين (sīn) or the word سَوْفَ (sawfa) in front of the verb to show it is happening in the future.
| Arabic | English |
|---|---|
| سَأَذْهَبُ | I will go |
| سَيَذْهَبُ | He will go |
| سَتَذْهَبُ | She will go |
| سَنَذْهَبُ | We will go |
| سَتَذْهَبُونَ | You (pl.) will go |
| سَيَذْهَبُونَ | They will go |
You can also use سَوْفَ instead of س. Both mean "will."
Step 1: Start with a Subject
Think about who is doing the action. For example:
- أَنَا (I)
- هُوَ (he)
- هِيَ (she)
- نَحْنُ (we)
Step 2: Add the Future Marker
Put س or سَوْفَ before the verb.
Step 3: Add the Verb (in present form)
Use the same verb form as the present tense, but with the future meaning.
Here are examples from the textbook showing how to describe future events:
| Present (now) | Future with س | Future with سَوْفَ |
|---|---|---|
To say something will not happen, use لا before the verb:
| Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|
| سَأَذْهَبُ إِلَى السُّوقِ | لَا أَذْهَبْ إِلَى السُّوقِ |
| سَيَعِيشُ الْحَيَوَانُ فِي الْمَاءِ | لَا يَعِيشُ الْحَيَوَانُ فِي الْمَاءِ |
| سَيَزُورُ الْأَمِيرُ السُّوقَ | لَا يَزُورُ الْأَمِيرُ السُّوقَ |
Try forming these future sentences:
- I will read a story → سَأَقْرَأُ قِصَّةً
- She will help her mother → سَتُمْتَدُ أُمَّهَا
- We will travel to Zanzibar → سَنُسَافِرُ إِلَى زِنْجِبارَ
- The farmers will plant crops → سَيَزْرَعُ الْفَلَّاحُونَ
- The children will play in the park → سَيَلْعَبُ الْأَطْفَالُ فِي الْمَلْعَبِ
- The future tense tells what will happen later or in the future.
- Add س or سَوْفَ before the verb to make it future.
- The verb form looks like the present tense, but it has future meaning.
- Use لا + verb to make a negative future sentence.
- Make sure the subject (who is doing the action) matches the verb ending.
In everyday life in Tanzania, you can use the future tense when talking about plans — for example, when you tell your friend "سَنَلْعَبُ كُرَةَ الْقَدَمِ أَوْسَطٍ (We will play football tomorrow)" or when a market vendor says "سَيَأْتِي الزُّبَائِنُ غَدًا (The customers will come tomorrow)." This helps you talk about school trips, family visits, or farming activities that will happen next week or next month.
