Listening and Summarising Short Texts Orally
Summarising means telling the main ideas of a text in your own words, using fewer words but keeping the important meaning. When you summarise, you must:
- Pick out the main ideas (الأفكار الرئيسية)
- Leave out the less important details (التفاصيل الفرعية)
- Use your own words
This skill helps you understand what you hear and share it clearly with others.
Step 1: Listen Carefully
When you listen to a short text, pay full attention. Do not talk while others are speaking. Focus on the main points.
Step 2: Understand the Main Ideas
Ask yourself:
- Who is the text about?
- What happened?
- Where and when did it happen?
- Why is this important?
Step 3: Pick the Key Points
After listening, remember these questions to find the main ideas:
- What is the main topic?
- What are the most important facts?
- What should I tell others about this text?
Step 4: Summarise Orally
Say your summary in a few clear sentences. Use simple Arabic words.
Here is an example from your textbook about a farmer:
Original Text: "The farmer goes to the field every day. He works in the field from morning until evening. He cleans the land from harmful weeds. He waters his crops. When the fruits are ready, he collects them and sells them in the market. With the money, he feeds his family and buys what they need."
How to Summarise:
You can say:
"الفلاح يذهب إلى الحقل كل يوم. يعمل في الحقل ويبيع الثمار في السوق. يستفيد من ثمن الثمار لإطعام أسرته."
(Farmer goes to the field every day. He works in the field and sells the fruits in the market. He benefits from the money to feed his family.)
Notice that this summary:
- Keeps the main ideas (farmer, field, work, selling, family)
- Removes less important details (morning/evening, specific crops)
- Uses fewer words than the original
Text about school attendance: "Khalid was absent from school yesterday. His friend Ahmed explains that continuous absence causes difficulty in understanding lessons. It also affects grades. Ahmed advises Khalid not to be absent except when necessary."
Good Summary: "خالد غاب عن المدرسة. أحمد يوضح أن الغياب المستمر يؤثر على الفهم والدرجات. يجب عدم الغياب إلا للضرورة."
(Khalid was absent from school. Ahmed explains that continuous absence affects understanding and grades. One should not be absent except when necessary.)
- Listen first — do not try to summarise while the text is still playing
- Think in Arabic — try to use Arabic words you already know
- Keep it short — a good summary is usually 2-3 sentences
- Stay true to the text — do not add ideas that were not in the original text
- Practice with your friends — discuss what you heard in groups
Listen to a short text about any topic (from your teacher, a recording, or video). Then follow these steps:
- Ask yourself: What is this text about?
- Find 2-3 main points
- Say your summary in Arabic using your own words
- Share it with your classmates
Remember: The goal is to listen carefully, understand, and then share the meaning clearly in fewer words!
In Tanzania, you will use listening and summarising skills in many situations. For example, when you listen to the weather forecast on the radio (such as "it will rain tomorrow, so protect your crops"), you can summarise and tell your family: "It will rain tomorrow; we must cover our maize in the field." This helps your family make quick decisions for farming and daily life.
