Listening to Simple Instructions and Carrying Them Out
When someone speaks to you, your job is to listen carefully, understand what you are being asked to do, and then carry out the instruction correctly. This skill is called "following instructions."
In Arabic, we call this الاستماع وامتثال الأوامر السهلة (al-istimāʿ wa al-imtiṣāl al-awāmir al-sahlh) — listening and obeying simple commands.
Good listening helps you:
- Understand your lessons better
- Know what your teacher wants you to do
- Avoid mistakes in your work
- Learn new things quickly
When you don't listen carefully, you might do the wrong thing, miss important information, or have to ask the teacher to repeat the instruction.
Step 1: Listen Carefully (Focus)
When your teacher or anyone else gives you an instruction, give them your full attention. Look at them. Do not talk or think about other things.
Arabic word: التركيز (al-tarkīz) — focusing
Step 2: Understand What You Hear
After listening, ask yourself: What am I being asked to do?
For example, if the teacher says "Open your books to page 20," you need to understand that you must find page 20 in your textbook.
Step 3: Do It Right Away
Once you understand the instruction, carry it out immediately. Do not wait or delay.
Arabic word: الامتثال (al-imtiṣāl) — obeying / carrying out
Step 4: Check Your Work
After you complete the instruction, check that you did it correctly. If you are unsure, ask the teacher to explain again.
Here are common instructions you might hear in class:
| Instruction (Arabic) | Meaning in English |
|---|---|
| افتحوا كتبكم | Open your books |
| اقرأوا الجملة | Read the sentence |
| اكتبوا الجواب | Write the answer |
| اجلسوا بهدوء | Sit quietly |
| استمعوا جيداً | Listen carefully |
| اجيبوا عن السؤال | Answer the question |
| اركزوا على الدرس | Focus on the lesson |
Listen to these instructions and do what they say:
-
Instruction: Stand up (قوموا)
- Your action: Stand up from your seat
-
Instruction: Sit down (اجلسوا)
- Your action: Sit down
-
Instruction: Look at the board (انظروا إلى السبورة)
- Your action: Turn your eyes to the board
-
Instruction: Write your name on the paper (اكتبوا اسمكم على الورقة)
- Your action: Use your pen to write your name
-
Instruction: Open your book to page fifteen (افتحوا كتابكم على الصفحة خمسة عشر)
- Your action: Find page 15 in your textbook
| ✅ Do This (allowed / جائز) | ❌ Don't Do This (not allowed / غير جائز) |
|---|---|
| Focus on the speaker (التركيز) | Interrupt while someone is speaking (المقاطعة) |
| Take notes if needed (كتابة الملاحظات) | Talk while listening |
| Ask questions if you don't understand | Daydream or look around |
| Follow the instruction immediately | Wait too long or ignore the instruction |
In everyday life in Tanzania, you use this skill constantly. For example, when you go to the soko (market) and the vendor tells you the price of tomatoes — "Elfu moja na mia tano" (1,500 TZS) — you must listen carefully and then give the correct amount of money. If you don't listen properly, you might give the wrong amount and lose your money or not get the correct change. This same skill of listening and carrying out instructions helps you follow directions from your parents, teachers, and shopkeepers everywhere you go.
