Describing Daily Activities in Arabic
In this lesson, you will learn how to describe what you do every day using simple Arabic vocabulary and grammar. By the end, you will be able to tell others about your daily activities clearly and correctly.
Here are important words for describing daily activities:
| Arabic | English |
|---|---|
| أَقُومُ (aqūmu) | I wake up / stand |
| أَذْهَبُ (adhhabu) | I go |
| أَكُلُ (akulu) | I eat |
| أَشْرَبُ (ashrabu) | I drink |
| أَنَامُ (anāmu) | I sleep |
| أَقْرَأُ (aqra'u) | I read |
| أَكْتُبُ (aktubu) | I write |
| أَلْعَبُ (al'abu) | I play |
| أُسَاعِدُ (usā'idu) | I help |
| أَغْسِلُ (aghsilu) | I wash |
In Arabic, a sentence needs two main parts:
- The Verb (فِعْل) – the action word
- The Subject (فَاعِل) – who does the action
Structure: Verb + Subject
Examples from the textbook:
| Verb (Action) | Subject (Who) | Complete Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| يَقْرَأُ | التِّلْمِيذُ | يَقْرَأُ التِّلْمِيذُ دَرْسًا |
| يَكْتُبُ | الطَّالِبَةُ | تَكْتُبُ الطَّالِبَةُ وَاجِبًا |
| يَغْسِلُ | الْبِنْتُ | تَغْسِلُ الْبِنْتُ الْمَلَابِسَ |
Use past tense to describe activities you did yesterday or already completed.
How to form past tense:
- I (male/female): Added vowel to the root
- He: Adds (ـَ) at the end
- She: Adds (ـَتْ) at the end
Examples:
| English | Arabic (Past) |
|---|---|
| I went to school | ذَهَبْتُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ |
| The student wrote | كَتَبَ التِّلْمِيذُ |
| The girl ate | أَكَلَتِ الْبِنْتَ |
| We played | لَعِبْنَا |
From the textbook: "ماذا فَعَلْتَ في عَطَلَةِ نِهايَةِ الْأُسْبيع؟" (What did you do on the weekend?)
Use present tense to describe activities happening now or regularly.
Examples:
| English | Arabic (Present) |
|---|---|
| I go to school daily | أَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ |
| The student reads | يَقْرَأُ التِّلْمِيذُ |
| The girl washes | تَغْسِلُ الْبِنْتُ |
| We help our mother | نُسَاعِدُ أُمَّنَا |
Let us write sentences about a school day, using vocabulary from the textbook:
Step 1: Start with the verb
- أَقْوُمُ (I wake up)
- أَغْسِلُ وَجْهِي (I wash my face)
Step 2: Add the subject
- أَقْوُمُ الْمُبَكِّرَ (I wake up early)
- أَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ (I go to school)
Step 3: Make complete sentences
| Activity | Arabic Sentence |
|---|---|
| I wake up early | أَقْوُمُ الْمُبَكِّرَ كُلَّ صَبَاحٍ |
| I go to school | أَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ |
| I study Arabic | أَتَعَلَّمُ اللُّغَةَ الْعَرَبِيَّةَ |
| I eat lunch at noon | أَأْكُلُ الطَّعَامَ الظَّهِيرَةَ |
| I return home evening | أَرْجِعُ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ مَسَاءً |
Try to describe your daily activities using this pattern:
Verb + Subject + What you did/will do
- _____________ (I wake up) _____________ (in the morning)
- _____________ (I go) _____________ (to school)
- _____________ (I eat) _____________ (food)
- _____________ (I play) _____________ (football)
- _____________ (I sleep) _____________ (at night)
- A sentence needs a verb (action) and a subject (who does the action)
- Past tense tells about completed actions
- Present tense tells about regular actions or actions happening now
- Use the correct verb form based on who is doing the action
In Tanzania, you can use these Arabic phrases when greeting Tanzanian traders or visitors from Zanzibar, Pemba, or other East African coastal areas who use Arabic in their daily conversations. For example, when you meet a visitor from Zanzibar at a market in Dar es Salaam, you can say "أَذْهَبُ إِلَى السُّوقِ كُلَّ جُمُعَةٍ" (I go to the market every Friday) to describe your weekly activity, and they will understand you clearly.
