Expressing Time in Arabic
In Arabic, we can talk about different times: what happened yesterday, what is happening now, and what will happen tomorrow. We do this by changing the form of the verb. This is called expressing time.
1. Past Time (الماضي)
We use verbs that end with specific letters to show actions that already happened.
Key patterns:
- Singular male: ذَهَبَ (he went)
- Singular female: ذَهَبَتْ (she went)
- Plural male: ذَهَبُوا (they went)
- Plural female: ذَهَبْنَ (they went - female)
Examples from daily life:
| English | Arabic |
|---|---|
| The student went to school | ذَهَبَ الطَّالِبُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ |
| The girl ate food | أَكَلَتِ الْبِنْتُ الطَّعَامَ |
| We played football | لَعِبْنَا كُرَةَ الْقَدَمَ |
2. Present Time (المضارع)
We use special letters at the beginning of verbs to show actions happening now.
Key patterns:
- I (male/female): أَذْهَبُ (I go)
- You (male singular): تَذْهَبُ
- You (female singular): تَذْهَبِينَ
- He: يَذْهَبُ
- She: تَذْهَبُ
- We: نَذْهَبُ
- They (male): يَذْهَبُونَ
- They (female): يَذْهَبْنَ
Examples:
| English | Arabic |
|---|---|
| I read the book | أَقْرَأُ الْكِتَابَ |
| The teacher explains the lesson | يُشَرِّحُ الْمُعَلِّمُ الدَّرْسَ |
| We go to school every day | نَذْهَبُ إِلَى الْمَدْرَسَةِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ |
3. Future Time (المستقبل)
We add either سَ or سَوْفَ before the present tense verb to show future actions.
Patterns:
- سَ + present verb = سَأَذْهَبُ (I will go)
- سَوْل + present verb = سَوْفَ أَذْهَبُ (I will go)
Examples:
| English | Arabic |
|---|---|
| I will travel tomorrow | سَأَسافِرُ غَدًا |
| The students will study | سَيَتَعَلَّمُ الطُّلَّابُ |
| We will eat rice | سَنَأْكُلُ الْأُرْزَ |
Learn these common time words:
| English | Arabic |
|---|---|
| Yesterday | أَمْسِ |
| Today | الْيَوْمَ |
| Tomorrow | غَدًا |
| Every day | كُلَّ يَوْمٍ |
| Now | الْآنَ |
| In the morning | فِي الصَّبَاحِ |
| In the evening | فِي الْمَسَاءِ |
| Every week | كُلَّ أُسْبُوعٍ |
| Every month | كُلَّ شَهْرٍ |
| Every year | كُلَّ عَامٍ |
Here are sentences that show different times clearly:
Past:
- أَمْسِ ذَهَبْتُ إِلَى السُّوقِ
- Yesterday I went to the market.
Present:
- الْآنَ أَقْرَأُ الْكِتَابَ
- Now I am reading the book.
Future:
- غَدًا سَأَزُورُ صَدِيقِي
- Tomorrow I will visit my friend.
Look at the time word and make a sentence:
- أَمْسِ → أَمْسِ لَعِبْتُ كُرَةَ الْقَدَمِ
- الْيَوْمَ → الْيَوْمَ أَتَعَلَّمُ الْعَرَبِيَّةَ
- غَدًا → غَدًا سَأَذْهَبُ إِلَى بَيْتِ جَدَّتِي
- The past tense shows completed actions
- The present tense shows ongoing actions
- Add سَ or سَوْفَ for future actions
- Time words like أَمْسِ, الْيَوْمَ, and غَدًا help clarify when something happens
In Tanzania, you can use these time expressions in many daily situations. For example, when you go to the soko (market) in the morning to buy vegetables like mboga (greens) or nyanya (tomatoes), you might say "Ninunua mboga leo" — or in Arabic "أَشْتَرِي الْمَبْغَاتِ الْيَوْمَ". If you plan to sell your goods at the market tomorrow, you would say "سَأَبِيعُ غَدًا" — using the future tense you learned today.
