Reading and Writing Arabic Syllables
In this lesson, you will practice reading and writing Arabic syllables (silabi). A syllable in Arabic is made up of letters that are joined together to form words. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read Arabic words correctly and write them neatly.
Here are some common Arabic words (syllables) that you must learn to read and write:
| Arabic Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| كِتَابٌ | Book |
| قَلَمٌ | Pen |
| دَفْتَرٌ | Notebook |
| بَابٌ | Door |
| طَاوِلَةٌ | Table |
| كُرْسِيٌّ | Chair |
| مِصْبَاحٌ | Lamp |
| مِسْطَرَةٌ | Ruler |
- Look at each letter – Arabic is read from right to left.
- Sound out each letter – Say the sound of each letter clearly.
- Join the sounds – Blend the letter sounds together to say the whole word.
- Check the meaning – Think about what the word means.
- Step 1: Look at the letters: ك - ت - ا - ب
- Step 2: Sound each letter: "ka" – "ta" – "a" – "ba"
- Step 3: Join them: "ki-taab"
- Step 4: This means "book"
Read each word aloud, then write it in your exercise book:
- قَلَمٌ (qalam) – Pen
- بَابٌ (bab) – Door
- مِسْطَرَةٌ (mistara) – Ruler
- حَقِيبَةٌ (haqiiba) – Bag
Sometimes letters are missing from words. You must add the correct letter.
Example:
- سَفِفَت (safafa) – The letter "ta" was added
- جَفِنيَف (jafnif) – The letter "nun" was added
Try these:
- حَفت (hafta) – Add the letter "fa"
- طَلُوع (taluu) – Add the letter "ain"
- مَشَي (mashi) – Add the letter "ya"
When you write Arabic words, remember:
- Start from the right side of the page
- Form letters carefully, connecting them properly
- Keep your writing neat and equal in size
Write these words three times each:
- بَابٌ
- كِتَابٌ
- قَلَمٌ
In Tanzania, you will use Arabic reading and writing skills when reading labels on products in shops, reading simple prayers (duaa), or when learning religious studies at mosque school. For example, when you go to a duka and see the word كِتَابٌ on a book, or قَلَمٌ on a pen packet, you can read and recognize these words correctly.
