Listen and Pronounce Arabic Sounds
In this lesson, we learn to listen carefully to Arabic sounds and pronounce them correctly. Listening carefully helps us speak Arabic well. The key Arabic sounds come from the letters (حروف) and words (كلمات) we learn.
Arabic has some sounds that are different from Swahili or English. Here are the important ones to practice:
- ص (Saad) – like the "s" in "sun" but deeper in the throat
- س (Seen) – the regular "s" sound
- ش (Sheen) – the "sh" sound
- ق (Qaaf) – a deep "k" sound from the back of the throat
- ك (Kaaf) – the normal "k" sound
- ع (Ayn) – a sound made by squeezing the throat (no English equivalent)
- ح (Haa) – a breathy "h" sound from the throat
Here are simple words from our textbook. Listen to each word and practice saying it:

In Tanzania, you can use your Arabic listening and speaking skills when you visit Zanzibar, where many people speak Arabic. For example, when buying fruits at Forodhani Market in Stone Town, you can greet the seller by saying أَهْلاً (ahlan – hello) and ask for fruits like مَوْزَةٌ (mawzah – banana) or بُرْتُقَالٌ (burtuqal – orange). Practicing these sounds helps you communicate with Arabic-speaking friends and traders in your community.
