Reading and Writing Arabic Consonants
In this lesson, you will learn to read and write the Arabic consonants correctly. Arabic has 28 letters that represent consonant sounds. Each letter has a specific shape, and many letters change their shape depending on where they appear in a word—at the beginning, middle, or end.
Arabic consonants are called الْحُرُوفُ الْمُهْجِيَّةُ (al-huruf al-muhjiyah). Here are some basic consonants you will practice:
| Arabic Letter | Name | Sound (like in) |
|---|---|---|
| ب | ba | book |
| ت | ta | table |
| ث | tha | think |
| ج | jim | join |
| ح | ha | (deep breath) |
| خ | kha | (like Scottish loch) |
| د | dal | door |
| ذ | dhal | this |
In Arabic, most consonants look different depending on whether they stand alone, come at the beginning of a word, in the middle, or at the end.
Example: The Letter ب (ba)
- Isolated/Final: بـ
- Initial: بَـ
- Medial: ـبـ
- Final: ـب
Notice how the letter connects to the letters around it. This is why you must practice writing each letter in different positions.
Step 1: Read Aloud
Listen to your teacher or audio and repeat each consonant clearly. Say the name of each letter and its sound.
Practice reading these consonants:
ب - ت - ج - د - ذ - ر - ز - س - ش - ص - ض
Step 2: Trace the Letters
Place thin paper over the letter shapes and trace carefully. Start with the basic isolated form first, then practice writing them in words.
Step 3: Write from Dictation
Your teacher will say a consonant, and you write it. This helps you remember the correct shape.
Task: Read and write the consonant ج (jim)
- Reading: The letter ج is called جيم (jeem). It makes the sound like the "j" in "jump."
- Writing:
- At the beginning of a word: جَـ
- In the middle: ـجـ
- At the end: ـج
Word example: جَامِعَةٌ (university) — read as jaami'ah
- Arabic is written from right to left.
- Most Arabic letters connect to the letter before and after them.
- Some letters only connect to the letter before them (like و, ي, ر).
- Always practice writing each letter in all its forms: initial, medial, and final.
- Pay attention to dots (نُقاط) — they distinguish similar letters (like ب, ت, ث).
- Reading practice: Read aloud the consonants your teacher points to.
- Writing practice: Write each consonant three times in your notebook.
- Dictation: Write the consonants your teacher says.
- Matching: Match the letter to its name and sound.
In Tanzania, you will use Arabic consonants when reading religious texts such as the Quran and hadith, which are an important part of Islamic education in many schools and communities. For example, when reading simple Quranic verses or prayer texts, recognizing and writing Arabic consonants correctly helps you pronounce words properly and write basic religious greetings like السلام عليكم (Peace be upon you).
