Arabic Vowels: Listening and Pronunciation
Arabic vowels are special marks that we add to Arabic letters. They tell us how to pronounce the letters. In Arabic, these marks are called الحَرَكَات (al-Ḥarakāt), meaning "movements" or "vowels."
In Standard III Arabic, we learn to listen carefully to these vowel sounds and pronounce them correctly.
Arabic has three short vowels. Each vowel changes the sound of a letter:
| Arabic Mark | Name | Sound | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| َ (above letter) | Fatha (فَتْحَة) | a as in "cat" | بَ = ba |
| ِ (below letter) | Kasra (كَسْرَة) | i as in "sit" | بِ = bi |
| ُ (above letter) | Damma (ضَمَّة) | u as in "put" | بُ = bu |
Important Notes
- The vowel mark is written above or below the Arabic letter.
- Each vowel changes how the letter sounds.
- We must listen carefully to hear the difference between the sounds.
Step 1: Listen to Your Teacher
Your teacher will say words with different vowels. Listen very carefully:
- With Fatha (a): بَابٌ (bābun) – door
- With Kasra (i): كِتَابٌ (kitābun) – book
- With Damma (u): مُعَلِّمٌ (muʿallimun) – teacher
Step 2: Repeat After the Teacher
Say each word after your teacher. Pay attention to your mouth position:
- Fatha: Open your mouth slightly, say "a"
- Kasra: Smile a little, say "i"
- Damma: Make your mouth round, say "u"
Step 3: Practice in Groups
Work with your classmates. One student says a word, and others identify the vowel sound.
Example 1: Identifying Vowels
Look at these words from your textbook:
| Word | Vowel | Sound |
|---|---|---|
| طَاوِلَةٌ | َ (fatha) | ta |
| كُرْسِيٌّ | ُ (damma) | kur |
| مِصْبَاحٌ | ِ (kasra) | miṣ |
Example 2: Pronouncing Correctly
Say these words slowly:
- قَلَمٌ (qalamun) – pen (fatha on ل)
- دَفْتَرٌ (daftarn) – notebook (fatha on د)
- سَاعَةٌ (sāʿatun) – clock (fatha on س)
- Listen to Arabic audio from your textbook CD or radio
- Repeat each word three times
- Record yourself and compare with your teacher's pronunciation
- Ask someone to test you on hearing the different vowels
- Arabic vowels are marks written above or below letters
- Fatha = a sound ( mouth slightly open)
- Kasra = i sound (smile position)
- Damma = u sound (round lips)
- Listen carefully, then practice speaking
- Practice every day to improve your pronunciation
In Tanzania, you will hear Arabic vowels when listening to prayers at the mosque, watching religious videos on your phone, or when greeting Muslim friends with words like "Assalamu alaykum" (which contains Arabic vowel sounds). Being able to hear and say these vowels correctly helps you understand Islamic teachings and communicate better with your community.
