Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

STDs are a group of diseases transmitted from an infected person to another through sexual contact.

Types of sexually transmitted diseases

There are various sexually transmitted diseases, each with its own symptoms in females and males. These include:

1. Gonorrhoea

   • Cause: Bacteria called Neisseria.
   • Symptoms in Females:
     • Discharge of pus from the vagina.
     • Bad smell from the vagina.
     • Pain during urination.
   • Symptoms in Males:
     • Pain during urination.
     • Discharge of pus from the penis.
     • Painful or swollen testes.
   • Transmission: Pregnant women can transmit gonorrhoea to their baby during birth.

2. Syphilis

   • Cause: Bacteria called Treponema.
   • Symptoms (in both males and females):
     • Painless sores on the penis or vagina, tongue, mouth, pelvis, or anus.
     • Loss of hair.
     • Throat pain.
     • Fever and swollen lymph nodes.
   • Transmission: Pregnant women can transmit syphilis to their baby during birth.

3. Chancroid

   • Cause: Bacteria called Hemophilic.
   • Symptoms in Females:
     • Sores in the vagina and anus.
     • Pain during urination and defecation.
     • Pain during sexual intercourse.
     • Abnormal vaginal discharge.
   • Symptoms in Males:
     • Bleeding sores on the penis.
     • Swelling of lymph nodes and fever.
     • Painful and swollen testes.
     • Discharge from the penis.
     • Pain during urination.

4. Chlamydia

   • Cause: Bacteria called Chlamydia.
   • Symptoms in Females:
     • Itching around the genitals.
     • Yellowish discharge with a bad smell from the vagina.
     • Changes in menstrual cycle.
     • Severe abdominal pain.
     • Pain during sexual intercourse.
     • Pain during urination.
   • Symptoms in Males:
     • Itching of the penis.
     • Pain during urination.
     • Discharge of pus from the penis during urination.

5. Trichomoniasis

   • Cause: Protozoan called Trichomonas.
   • Symptoms in Females:
     • Discharge of yellow fluid with a bad smell from the vagina.
     • Itching around the genitals.
     • Genital swelling and redness.
     • Pain during urination.
     • Abdominal pain.
     • Pain during sexual intercourse.
   • Symptoms in Males:
     • Bad smelling discharge from the penis.
     • Itching on the genitals.
     • Bruises on the genitals.
     • Pain during urination.

6. Genital Herpes

   • Cause: Herpes virus.
   • Symptoms (in both males and females):
     • Itching around the genital organs.
     • Blisters around the genitals.
     • Small soft sores in the genitals.
     • Swelling of lymph nodes in the pelvis.
