Most minerals in Tanzania are extracted by large foreign companies due to the lack of sufficient capital and technology among local mining companies. However, the mineral sector employs many Tanzanians and contributes significantly to the national economy.

Minerals are a non-renewable resource, so they should be extracted sustainably to support long-term development. Extracted minerals are mainly exported to earn foreign currency. For example, in 2017, the sector contributed 4.8% to Tanzania's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This figure increased to 5.07% in the 2018/2019 financial year.

Mining activities often lead to the removal of soil and vegetation, harming the environment, living organisms, and infrastructure. The following measures can help conserve mineral resources:

1. Value Addition Industries: Establishing mineral processing industries to add value to minerals before selling them instead of exporting unprocessed minerals.
2. Local Mineral Markets: Selling minerals through local markets rather than foreign markets ensures fair pricing and government revenue collection. Since 2019, almost every region in Tanzania has had a mineral market.
3. Bank Preservation: Some minerals should be stored in banks to boost national mineral reserves.
4. Mining Policies and Laws: Implementing strict environmental compliance policies for both small- and large-scale mining companies to reduce pollution.
5. Land Use Planning: Establishing clear boundaries for mining areas to prevent conflicts and accidents such as landslides.
6. Law Enforcement: Ensuring that mining regulations are followed to increase government revenue and environmental protection. This will support national development projects such as education and healthcare improvements.

The mining sector in Tanzania faces several challenges, including:

1. Shortage of mining experts to educate local miners on efficient extraction and processing techniques.
2. Illegal sale of unprocessed minerals, leading to revenue loss.
3. Environmental destruction due to deforestation and pollution of water sources and air from mining activities.
4. Low-level processing technology, resulting in the export of raw minerals at low prices.
5. Mineral trafficking, which reduces foreign exchange earnings.
6. Lack of patriotism, leading to local miners exporting raw minerals instead of processing them locally.

To address these challenges, Tanzania should:

1. Enforce mining policies and laws to ensure responsible extraction.
2. Establish clear mining boundaries to prevent conflicts.
3. Ensure environmental compliance by requiring proper waste management systems for air and water pollution control.
4. Build mineral processing industries to increase the value of exported minerals.
5. Promote mineral auctions in Tanzania to ensure fair trade.
6. Provide education and training to Tanzanians working in the mining sector.
7. Encourage patriotism to reduce mineral trafficking.
8. Enhance interdepartmental cooperation among land, environment, mining, and business officials to promote sustainable mining.
