Forest Resources
A forest is a collection of large and small trees, shrubs, and grasses. Often, forests are uninhabited by humans. Tanzania is rich in forests, both natural and planted, which play a crucial role in the country's environment and economy.
Facilitating Rain Formation
- Forests help in rainfall formation by releasing moisture into the atmosphere.
- Forested areas receive more rainfall, which benefits agriculture and water supply.
Providing Habitat for Wildlife
- Forests serve as homes for various animals, birds, and insects.
- Examples of forest animals:
- Monkeys and chimpanzees – Important for biodiversity and tourism.
- Birds – Find food and shelter in forests.
- Bees – Live in forests, pollinate flowers, and produce honey.
- Butterflies – Attracted to forest flowers, help in pollination, and act as tourist attractions.
Tourism and Economic Benefits
- Wildlife and insects in forests attract tourists, boosting the economy.
- Eco-tourism in forested areas creates employment opportunities.
Source of Medicinal Plants
- Many medicinal plants found in forests are used to treat human, animal, and plant diseases.
- Scientists extract chemicals from plants to manufacture modern medicines.
The following are ways to conserve the forest resource:
- Implementing policy and legislation on sustainable forest uses;
- Using alternative sources of energy such as gas, solar, and wind, for domestic and in other areas such as schools, colleges and hospitals;
- Providing education on sustainable forest use to communities living close to forests;
- Creating fire breakers around forested areas in order to prevent burning of a larger area; and
- Encourage communities close to forests to use alternative income generating activities such as beekeeping
Beekeeping
The following challenges can arise from using the forest resource:
- Shortage of forest officers to provide education on the sustainable use of forests;
- Forest burning;
- Unsustainable forest harvesting;
- Illegal trade in forest products; and
- Conducting human activities such as livestock keeping, agriculture, and honey harvesting in the forest area regardless of laws and regulations.
Some techniques can be used to deal with the challenges of using forest resources. Some of these techniques are as follows:
- Implementing sustainable forestry policies;
- Train and employ an adequate number of forest officers who can provide sustainable forestry education;
- Establish regulations to guide forests use for people living close to forests to ensure that they use the forest resource sustainably in generating income via, for example, beekeeping
