Understanding What You Read and Showing Feelings
When you read a text in Arabic, you need to do two things: first, understand what the message is saying, and second, show the correct feelings or reaction to that message. The message might make you happy, worried, surprised, or concerned. Your feelings should match what the text is telling you.
Step 1: Read the Text Carefully
Read the Arabic text slowly and look for unfamiliar words. Use the vocabulary list or dictionary to understand new words.
Step 2: Find the Main Message
Ask yourself: What is this text mostly about? What is the writer trying to tell me?
Step 3: Identify How You Should Feel
Think about the message:
- Does the text give good news or happy information? → Feel happy (سعيد)
- Does the text warn about danger or problem? → Feel concerned or worried (قلق)
- Does the text describe something amazing or surprising? → Feel surprised (متفاجئ)
- Does the text talk about something sad? → Feel sad (حزين)
Step 4: Express Your Feeling
You can show your feeling by:
- Telling others what you feel in your own words
- Drawing a picture that shows the feeling
- Explaining why you feel that way based on the text
Look at this passage from the textbook about malaria:
الملاريا مرض خطير ينتقل إلى الإنسان عندما يلسعه البعوض. ويجب علينا استخدام الناموسيات أثناء النوم، ورش العرق، وتجنب المياه الراكدة حول بيوتنا.
What is the message? The text tells us that malaria is a dangerous disease spread by mosquitoes, and we must protect ourselves.
How should we feel? We should feel concerned and careful (قلق وحذر) because malaria is dangerous.
Why? Because the text warns us about a health danger and tells us how to stay safe.
Read this short Arabic sentence and show the correct feeling:
نجاحك في الامتحان يجعل والديك فخورين بك
- Message: Your success in exams makes your parents proud of you.
- Feeling: Happy and proud (فخر)
- Reason: This is good news about achievement
| Arabic Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| يشعر (yash'uru) | to feel |
| 担心的 ( قلق ) | worried |
| سعيد (sa'id) | happy |
| متفاجئ (mutafajjij) | surprised |
| حزين (hazin) | sad |
| خطير (khatir) | dangerous |
- Always read the whole text before deciding how you feel
- Look for words that show if the news is good or bad
- Ask yourself: "Would I be happy or worried if this happened to me?"
- Remember: your feeling must match the message in the text
In everyday life in Tanzania, you will read short Arabic texts on notice boards at mosque, health posters in the community, or simple messages on your phone. For example, if you read a health poster at the local clinic saying "استخدم الناموسية للنوم" (Use the mosquito net for sleeping), you should feel concerned about malaria prevention and take action to protect your family. This helps you stay healthy and safe in your daily life.
