Customer:
Dialogue 2: At a Clothing Shop
Customer:
Follow these simple steps to create your own dialogue:
Step 1: Choose Your Topic
Decide whether you want to talk about food or clothing.
Step 2: Greet the Shopkeeper
Start with: أَلسَّلامُ عَلَيْكُمْ (Peace be upon you)
The shopkeeper will respond: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلامُ (And upon you, peace)
Step 3: Say What You Want
Use: أُريدُ... (I want...) or هَلْ عِنْدَكَ...؟ (Do you have...?)
Step 4: Ask About the Price
Say: بِكمْ هَذا؟ (How much is this?)
Step 5: Accept or Bargain
- Accept: حَسَنًا، أُريدُهُ (Okay, I want it)
- Bargain: هَلْ أَرْخَصُ؟ (Is it cheaper?)
Step 6: Thank and Say Goodbye
(Thank you)
(Goodbye)
Try to complete this dialogue:
You: أَلسَّلامُ عَلَيْكُمْ!
Shopkeeper: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلامُ!
You: (Say you want to buy tomatoes)
You: (Ask for half a kilo)
You: (Say no thank you and ask for the total)

In Tanzania, you can use these Arabic phrases when you visit shops in your local market. For example, if you go to buy ugali (ugali), tomatoes, and onions at the market in Dodoma or Arusha, you can ask the shopkeeper in Arabic: "بِكم هَذا؟" (How much is this?) to know the price before buying. This helps you communicate well when shopping for food and clothing with your family.
