Listening and Following Instructions in the Market
In this lesson, you will learn how to listen carefully to instructions and directions given in the market environment and follow them correctly. This is an important skill that helps you communicate well and complete tasks successfully when buying or selling at the market.
| Arabic | English |
|---|---|
Market |
What is required/needed |
He/she wants |
He/she goes |
He/she buys |
He/she sells |
Price |
Tanzanian shilling |
Step 1: Listen Carefully
When someone gives you instructions, pay full attention. Do not interrupt. Look at the speaker and focus on every word.
Step 2: Understand What Is Said
Think about what the instruction means. If you do not understand, you can ask politely.
Step 3: Do What Was Asked
Follow the instruction step by step. Make sure you do exactly what was asked.
Situation: A customer is at the market asking a seller about the price of mangoes.
(What do you want, my brother?)
(I want to buy the mango. What is its price?)
(One kilogram of mango is 1,000 shillings.)
(I want three kilograms. Do you accept paying 3,000 shillings?)
(Yes, it is good. Take it and enjoy it.)
Following the Instructions in This Dialogue
From this dialogue, we can see several instructions and responses:
- "مَاذَا تُرِيدُ؟" (What do you want?) → The customer responds with what they want to buy.
(What is its price?) → The seller gives the price.
(Take it) → The customer takes the mangoes after paying.
Situation: Someone is looking for the vegetable stall.
(Excuse me, where is the vegetable section?)
(Go away from the door, then go to the right. You will find vegetables in the first place.)
Following steps:
(Move away from the door)
(Go to the right)
(You will find vegetables)
- Listen to every word carefully
- Ask if you do not understand
- Follow the instructions in order
- Be polite when asking or responding
- Practice listening to Arabic dialogues regularly
Listen to these market instructions and match them with what you should do:
| Instruction | What to Do |
|---|---|
Go to the market |
Buy the onion |
Ask about the price |
Pay the money |
Take the goods |
In Tanzania, you will use these listening skills every time you go to the market. For example, when you go to buy rice at the market in Dodoma or Dar es Salaam, you need to listen carefully to the seller's price, ask questions if needed, and follow instructions like "Come back tomorrow for fresh rice" or "The price is 2,000 shillings per kilogram." Being able to understand and follow these instructions helps you buy things correctly and avoid problems.
