Step 1: Read the Whole Text Carefully

Read the entire text from beginning to end. Do not stop at difficult words. Try to understand the general meaning first.

Step 2: Look for New Words

When you find a new word, look at its context. The sentences around it can help you guess its meaning. In the textbook, there is a vocabulary table that explains new words — use it to check your understanding.

3: Find the Main Idea

Ask yourself: What is this text about? What is the writer trying to tell me? The main idea is usually found in the first or last sentence, or it is repeated throughout the text.

4: Identify the Intended Message

The intended message is what the writer wants you to do, believe, or remember after reading. It is often a lesson, a warning, or important information.

Let us use this short text from your textbook about public transport:

النَّصُّ: الْمَوَاصِلَاتُ الْعَامَّةُ هِيَ وَسَائِلُ النَّقْلِ الَّتِي يَسْتَخْدِمُهَا النَّاسُ. مِنْهَا الْحَافِلَاتُ، وَالْقَطَارَاتُ، وَالدَّالَالَا. الدَّالَالَا حَافِلَةٌ صَغِيرَةٌ تَنْقُلُ الرُّكَّابَ دَاخِلَ الْمُدُنِ. الْقَوَارِبُ تَنْقُلُ النَّاسَ فِي الْبُحَيْرَاتِ.

Now let us identify the intended message:

1. What is the text about? It is about public transport in Tanzania.
2. What are the main types mentioned? Buses (حافلات), trains (قطارات), daladalas (دالالا), and boats (قوارب).
3. What is the intended message? The message is: There are different types of public transport in Tanzania, and each type serves a different purpose.

When you are asked about the intended message, follow these steps:

1. Read the question carefully.
2. Think about what the whole text is saying.
3. Look for the sentence that tells you the main purpose.
4. Give your answer in your own simple words.

Example Question

مَا هُوَ الْعِبْرَةُ الَّتِي يُرِيدُ النَّاصِرُ أَنْ يُعَلِّمَنَاهَا؟

(What is the lesson that the writer wants to teach us?)

How to Answer

• First, read the text again.
• Second, ask yourself: What should I learn from this?
• Third, write your answer clearly.

• Read Arabic texts every day, even if they are short.
• Always look at the vocabulary table before you start reading.
• After reading, ask yourself: What did I learn from this text?
• Practice with your classmates by discussing what you have read.
• When you find a new word, try to guess its meaning before looking it up.

The writer may want you to:

• Learn new information (like facts about malaria)
• Follow advice (like using mosquito nets)
• Understand the importance of something (like public transport)
• Be aware of a danger (like diseases)

Reading a simple text correctly is not enough. You must also identify the intended message — the main purpose the writer has for you. To do this, read carefully, find the main idea, and ask yourself what the writer wants you to know or do.

In Tanzania, you will often read notices, signs, and short messages in Arabic or Swahili. For example, when you see a health poster at the clinic saying "Use the mosquito net to prevent malaria," you need to read it correctly and understand the message: "Protect yourself from malaria by sleeping under a mosquito net." This skill helps you follow instructions, stay safe, and make good decisions in your daily life.
