Finding and Writing Main Ideas in a Text
The main idea is the most important thought or message that the author wants you to understand from a text. It tells you what the whole text is about. When you read a short text, you need to find this main idea and write it in your own words.
Key Words in Arabic
Here are important words you need to know for this skill:
- الْفَكْرَةُ الْرَئِيسَةُ (al-fikrah al-rai'sah) = the main idea
- النَّصُّ (al-nassu) = the text
- الْقِرَاءَةُ (al-qirā'ah) = reading
- الْفَهْمُ (al-fahmu) = understanding
- يَقْرَأُ (yaqra'u) = he reads
- يَكْتُبُ (yaktubu) = he writes
Follow these simple steps:
- Read the whole text carefully — Do not rush. Read every sentence.
- Ask yourself: "What is this text mostly about?" — This helps you find the main point.
- Look for repeated ideas — The author usually repeats the important message.
- Find the topic sentence — In many texts, the first or last sentence gives the main idea.
- Write the main idea in your own words — Do not copy the exact sentences; use simpler language.

- Always read the whole text first before writing anything.
- Ask yourself: "What is the author telling me?"
- Write only one or two sentences for the main idea.
- Check that your written main idea covers the whole text, not just one part.
In everyday life in Tanzania, you will use this skill when reading short notices at school, such as announcements about school events or messages from your teacher. For example, if you see a notice at your school that says "Tomorrow there will be a sports day at 8:00 AM," you will need to identify the main idea — that there is a sports event tomorrow — and tell your parents about it. This helps you understand important information and share it with others.
