Finding the Meaning of New Words in a Text
When you read an Arabic text, you will often encounter words you do not know. The good news is that you can figure out their meanings by using clues from the sentence itself and by looking at the context. This skill helps you understand what you read without always needing a dictionary.
-
Read the whole sentence first – Do not stop at the new word. Read the entire sentence to understand the general idea.
-
Look at the context – Ask yourself: What is the sentence about? Who is speaking? What is happening? The other words in the sentence give you clues.
-
Check for familiar parts – If you know part of the word (like a root you have learned before), use it to guess the meaning.
-
Use pictures or headings – Sometimes the title of the text or pictures nearby can help you understand the topic.
-
Ask for help – After trying on your own, discuss with your teacher or classmates.
Here is a simple Arabic text with some new words:
النَّصُّ: ذَهَبَ أَحْمَدُ إِلَى السُّوقِ يَوْمَ الجُمُعَةِ. اشْتَرَى فَواكِهَ وَخُبزًا وَعَصيرًا. كانَ السُّوقُ مُزدَحِمًا جِدًّا.
New Words in the Text
| Arabic (voweled) | Romanization | English Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| السُّوقِ | as-sūqi | the market |
| الجُمُعَةِ | al-jumuʿati | Friday |
| فَواكِهَ | fawākiha | fruits |
| خُبزًا | khubzan | bread |
| عَصيرًا | ʿaṣīran | juice |
| مُزدَحِمًا | muzdahiman | crowded |
How to Find These Meanings
In the first sentence, ذَهَبَ أَحْمَدُ إِلَى السُّوقِ (Ahmad went to the market), the word السُّوقِ is connected to the place where people buy things. Even if you do not know the exact word, you can guess it means "market" because people go somewhere to buy things.
In the second sentence, اشْتَرَى فَواكِهَ (He bought fruits), the word فَواكِهَ comes from the root ف-و-ك-ه related to fruits. The word عَصيرًا (juice) is from the root ع-ص-р, which means "to squeeze" — you squeeze fruits to make juice.
The word مُزدَحِمًا (crowded) describes a place full of people. The pattern مُفْتَعِلًا often describes a state or condition.
When you read, keep a notebook of new words. Write the Arabic word, its romanization, the sentence where you found it, and its meaning. Review these words regularly.
In Tanzania, you can use this skill when you see Arabic words on medicine packets, in Islamic religious materials, or when traveling to Zanzibar where many signs and notices include Arabic words. For example, if you visit a shop in Stone Town and see the word خُبز (khubz) on a sign, you can use context clues to understand it means "bread" and know what the shop sells.
