- Read a text and identify the meaning of the new words in it
- Read and summarise a simple text
- Read a short text and write the main ideas in it
Summarizing means telling the main ideas of a text in fewer words. When you summarize, you keep the most important information and leave out the small details. In Arabic, summarizing is called اختصار (ikhtiṣār).
Here are important words you will use when reading and summarizing Arabic texts:
| Arabic (voweled) | Romanization | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| يَقْرَأُ | yaqra'u | he/she reads |
| يَفْهَمُ | yafhamu | he/she understands |
| مُلَخَّصٌ | mulakhaṣun | summary |
| أَهَمُّ | ahammun | important |
| جُمْلَةٌ | jumlatun | sentence |
| كَلِمَةٌ | kalimatun | word |
| مَعْنًى | ma'nan | meaning |
| قِصَّةٌ | qiṣṣatun | story |
| نَصٌّ | naṣṣun | text |
| يَخْتَصِرُ | yakhtiṣiru | he/she summarizes |
- Read the whole text carefully — Read every sentence to understand the story or information.
- Find the main idea — Ask yourself: What is this text mostly about?
- Look for important details — Find the key facts or events. Ignore small, unimportant details.
- Use your own words — Write a short summary in simple Arabic or in your own language.
- Check your summary — Make sure it includes the main idea and important details.
Here is a simple Arabic text about a market day:
النَّصُّ: ذَهَبَ عُمَرُ إِلَى السُّوقِ يَوْمَ الْأَحَدِ. اشْتَرَى عِنَبًا وَبُرْتُقَالًا. أَحَبَّ الْعِنَبَ كَثِيرًا. وَرَجَعَ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ مَسَاءً.
Romanization:
Dhahaba ʿUmārun ilā al-sūqi yawm al-aḥad. Ishtarā ʿinaban wa burtuqālan. Aḥabba al-ʿinaba kathīran. Wa rajaʿa ilā al-bayti masā'an.
English meaning:
Umar went to the market on Sunday. He bought grapes and oranges. He loved the grapes very much. And he returned home in the evening.
Summary of the Text
In Arabic:
ذَهَبَ عُمَرُ إِلَى السُّوقِ وَاشْتَرَى فَوَاكِهَ. أَحَبَّ الْعِنَبَ.
Romanization:
Dhahaba ʿUmārun ilā al-sūqi wa ishtarā fawākiha. Aḥabba al-ʿinaba.
English meaning:
Umar went to the market and bought fruits. He loved grapes.
This summary keeps the main idea (going to the market and buying fruit) and the most important detail (he loved grapes), but removes small details like the day of the week and the time he returned home.
- When reading Arabic stories, look for the who, what, and where — these are usually the main ideas.
- A good summary is short but clear. It should be 2–3 sentences long.
- Practice with your group: read a text together, discuss the main idea, then each person writes their own summary.
In everyday life in Tanzania, you use summarizing when you read a short news article in a newspaper or on your phone and then tell your friend the main points — for example, explaining that "the price of rice at the market has gone down to TSh 2,500 per kilo" without listing every small detail from the article. This skill helps you share information quickly with others.
