Number line of integers
A number line of integers is a straight line containing equally spaced short lines or dots. All the whole numbers on the right direction from zero are called positive integers, while all the opposites of positive whole numbers on the left direction from zero are called negative integers. Study figures (a) and (b) which show different ways of drawing number lines of integers:
(a) Number line of integers divided by short pieces of lines which are equally spaced.
(b) Number line of integers divided by small dots which are equally spaced.
The following are the steps for drawing a number line:
- Use a ruler and a pencil to draw a horizontal straight line, then insert equally spaced pieces of vertical lines.
- Write zero as a starting point which separates positive and negative integers. Thereafter, write the integers on the right and left of zero.
The negative integer can be indicated by placing a minus sign at the middle of the number. The numbers in the positive side can be written without the plus sign as shown in the following number line:
