Locating Features Using Cardinal Points

Cardinal points (North, South, East, and West) are essential for identifying the location of objects in the environment or on a map. By knowing where North is on a map, we can easily determine the other three directions—South, East, and West—and use them to locate various features.

Steps to Locate Features

  1. Find the North direction: Every map should indicate where North is, often with a symbol like a "N" or an arrow pointing to the top of the map. This is the starting point for determining all other directions.
  2. Identify South: South is always opposite North, and it will be at the bottom of the map. Knowing where North is helps you easily figure out where South lies.
  3. Identify East and West:
    • East (E) will be to the right of North on the map.
    • West (W) will be to the left of North on the map.

Example

Let's say you're trying to locate a school on a map:

  1. School is located North-East of your current location.
  2. To find this, you first identify North on the map, then move towards East from there, and you'll be in the general direction where the school is located.
