Water

Water is a chemical compound made up of two elements namely hydrogen and oxygen. Every day we use water for various purposes. Water can exist in solid, liquid, gaseous state.

Water is one of the most important substances on Earth. It is essential for all forms of life and plays a major role in many natural processes and human activities. Water is commonly found in its liquid state, but it can also exist as a solid (ice) or a gas (water vapor), depending on the temperature and pressure.

Occurrence of water

Water is found naturally in a variety of places on Earth. These include:

  1. Oceans and Seas These hold about 97% of the Earth's water, and the water is salty.
  2. Rivers and Lakes These are sources of fresh water used for domestic and industrial purposes.
  3. Rain Water from the atmosphere falls to the Earth in the form of rain, snow, or hail.
  4. Underground Water Also known as groundwater, found in wells and springs.
  5. Ice and Glaciers Found in polar regions and mountain tops, they contain frozen fresh water.
  6. In Living Things All plants and animals contain a large percentage of water. For example, the human body is made up of about 60-70% water.
  7. In the Atmosphere Water exists as water vapor and forms clouds when it condenses.
