An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by any chemical means. Elements can be represented by chemical symbols.
Some common elements
Chemical symbols are usually the first letter of the English or Latin name of the element. Some elements have symbols that are the first letter or letters of their English names.
| Name | Symbol |
|---|---|
| Hydrogen | H |
| Carbon | C |
| Nitrogen | N |
| Oxygen | O |
The symbol represents one atom of the element and must be written with a capital letter. If different elements begin with the same capital letter, a second lowercase letter is added to distinguish them.
Some elements have symbols with two letters from their names.
| Name | Symbol |
|---|---|
| Calcium | Ca |
| Cobalt | Co |
| Chlorine | Cl |
| Magnesium | Mg |
| Helium | He |
Some elements have chemical symbols that do not match their English names. These symbols come from their Latin names.
| Name of element | Latin name | Chemical symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Antimony | Stibium | Sb |
| Copper | Cuprum | Cu |
| Gold | Aurum | Au |
| Iron | Ferrum | Fe |
| Lead | Plumbum | Pb |
| Mercury | Hydrargyrum | Hg |
| Potassium | Kalium | K |
| Silver | Argentum | Ag |
| Sodium | Natrium | Na |
| Tin | Stannum | Sn |
| Tungsten | Wolfram | W |
Chemical symbols are very important in chemistry. They make it easier for scientists and students to learn, understand, and communicate ideas more effectively. The use of symbols avoids the need to write long names of elements every time.
Here are some important reasons why chemical symbols are used:
- They help in understanding elements easily – Instead of memorizing the full names of elements, one can remember just the symbols. For example, "O" is easier to remember than "oxygen".
- They are used in chemical equations – Instead of writing full names like "hydrogen reacts with oxygen", we can simply write:
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O - They help in identifying elements – Each symbol is unique. For example, Cu is the symbol for copper and helps distinguish it from cobalt (Co) or calcium (Ca).
- They make learning and communication in science easier – Symbols are short and standard all over the world, so scientists in different countries can understand each other easily.
All elements can be classified into two broad groups:
- Metals
- Non-metals
Metals and non-metals have different physical and chemical properties. These differences are helpful in identifying them and choosing them for the right use in experiments or real-life applications.
Examples:
- Metals: Iron, aluminium, zinc, copper, sodium
- Non-metals: Carbon, sulphur, hydrogen, oxygen
| S/N | Metals | Non-metals |
|---|---|---|
| 1. | Good conductors of electricity | Poor conductors of electricity (insulators) |
| 2. | Good conductors of heat | Poor conductors of heat |
| 3. | Have high melting and boiling points | Have low melting and boiling points |
| 4. | Have high tensile strength | Have low tensile strength |
| 5. | Are sonorous (produce ringing sound when hit) | Are not sonorous |
| 6. | Are ductile (can be drawn into wires) | Are not ductile |
| 7. | Are malleable (can be hammered into thin sheets) | Are not malleable |
| 8. | Are lustrous (shiny when cut or polished) | Are dull (not shiny), except for a few like diamond |
- Diamond: Even though it is a non-metal, it has a very high melting and boiling point. It is also the hardest natural substance known.
- Graphite: Another non-metal that behaves like a metal in some ways. It conducts electricity and heat well. Both diamond and graphite are forms of carbon.
- Sodium, potassium, and mercury: These are metals, but they have unusual properties. They are soft and have low melting points. Mercury is a metal that is liquid at room temperature, unlike most other metals.
