An emulsion is a mixture of two or more liquids in which one liquid is present as tiny droplets spread throughout the other liquid. The liquids in an emulsion are usually immiscible (do not mix), like oil and water.
Examples of emulsions: Milk, lotion, coconut milk.
- Used in food products such as mayonnaise and ice cream.
- Used in medicines, pharmaceutical products, and cosmetics like creams and lotions.
- Used in firefighting to extinguish small fires caused by flammable liquids.
A colloid is a mixture where very small particles of one substance are evenly distributed throughout another substance. The particles in a colloid are larger than in a solution but smaller than in a suspension. They do not settle out on standing.
Examples of colloids: Fog (liquid in gas), jelly (solid in liquid), and whipped cream (gas in liquid).
A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which solid particles are large enough to be seen with the naked eye and can settle at the bottom when left undisturbed.
Example of suspension: Muddy water, flour in water.
