Animals depend on the abiotic environment
Animals, like all living things, need certain things from their surroundings to survive. These things are called the abiotic components of the environment. Abiotic components are the non-living things around us, like air, water, temperature, and soil.
Oxygen for breathing
All animals, including humans, breathe in oxygen from the air. Oxygen is very important because it helps animals "burn" the food they eat to get energy. This process is called respiration. The energy animals get from food helps them do many things, like walking, running, swimming, or even thinking.
Fish, crocodiles, and whales are animals that live in water. They also need oxygen, but they get it in different ways:
- Fish use special parts in their bodies called gills to get oxygen from the water.
- Crocodiles and whales breathe air through their lungs, just like humans. They come to the surface of the water to breathe.
Water for survival
Water is very important for all animals, whether they live on land or in water. Water helps animals stay alive by:
- Keeping them hydrated (so they don't get thirsty).
- Helping them digest food.
- Allowing them to remove waste from their bodies (like urine).
- Regulating their body temperature (keeping them cool on hot days and warm on cold days).
Animals that live in water, like fish, crocodiles, and whales, need clean, fresh water to survive. Without enough oxygen in the water or if the water becomes dirty, these animals might not survive.
Shelter and habitat
Animals also need shelter and a place to live, called a habitat. A habitat is where an animal can find food, water, and safety. Different animals live in different habitats depending on their needs.
- Animals that live in water (like fish, crocodiles, and whales) find shelter and safety in the water. They also find food and space to live in the water.
- For animals on land, their habitats might be forests, deserts, grasslands, or even inside a burrow or cave.
The interdependence of animals and the abiotic environment
Animals and the non-living parts of the environment (abiotic factors) are connected and depend on each other. Here's how:
- Animals need oxygen and water to survive. These are abiotic factors that they get from the environment.
- Water is not only important for drinking, but also for living in, for animals that live in the sea or rivers.
- In return, animals help keep the balance in nature. For example, some animals help plants grow by spreading seeds or pollinating flowers.
