How the blood circulatory system works
-
Blood Flow from the Heart
- Blood is pumped from the heart to different parts of the body through the main artery, the aorta.
- The aorta has three main branches:
- First Branch: Supplies blood to the heart walls.
- Second Branch: Supplies blood to the upper body, including the arms, neck, and head.
- Third Branch: Supplies blood to the lower body, including the trunk and legs.
-
Capillaries and Nutrient Exchange
- The branches of the aorta divide into tiny blood vessels called capillaries, which reach individual body cells.
- Nutrients and other substances enter the cells through osmosis and diffusion.
- Waste products and carbon dioxide diffuse from the cells into the capillaries.
-
Return to the Heart
- Capillaries merge to form veins, which carry blood back to the heart via the vena cava.
-
Pulmonary Circulation
- The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
- In the lungs:
- Carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood and exits the body through the respiratory system.
- Oxygen diffuses into the capillaries.
- The oxygen-rich blood is carried back to the heart via the pulmonary vein.
-
Collaboration with Other Organs
- The circulatory system works together with the:
- Spleen
- Liver
- Kidneys
- Lungs
- These organs play vital roles in filtering, oxygenating, and maintaining the balance of substances in the blood.
- The circulatory system works together with the:
