Groups of living things

Groups of living things refer to the way living organisms are classified based on their similarities and differences. Living things are divided into categories to make it easier to study and understand them. There are two broad groups: plants and animals.

There are two major groups of living things, namely:

  1. Plants
  2. Animals

But these groups can be further divided into smaller groups.

The two main groups

Animals

  1. Animals are living things that cannot make their own food.
  2. They depend on plants or other animals for food.
  3. They can move from place to place.

Examples: Dogs, cats, fish, birds, insects, elephants, frogs, and humans.

Plants

  1. Plants are living things that can make their own food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide (photosynthesis).
  2. They do not move around but grow in one place.

Examples: Trees, grass, flowers, and crops like beans and maize.

Smaller groups of living things

Living things in the animal and plant groups can be classified further based on their specific characteristics.

Groups of animals

Animals can be grouped into categories like:

  1. Mammals: Animals that give birth to live young and have fur or hair (e.g., humans, cows, dogs).
  2. Birds: Animals with feathers and wings (e.g., chickens, crows, parrots).
  3. Reptiles: Cold-blooded animals with scales (e.g., snakes, lizards).
  4. Amphibians: Animals that live both on land and in water (e.g., frogs, salamanders).
  5. Fish: Animals that live in water and have gills (e.g., tilapia, sharks).
  6. Insects: Small animals with six legs and a body divided into three parts (e.g., bees, butterflies, ants).

Groups of plants

Plants can also be grouped into categories like:

  1. Flowering plants: Plants that produce flowers and seeds (e.g., mango trees, bean plants, rose bushes).
  2. Non-flowering plants: Plants that do not produce flowers (e.g., ferns, mosses).
