Groups of animals

Animals are classified into two main groups

Main groups of animals

Vertebrates

1. Animals with a vertebral column (backbone).
2. Examples: Humans, cows, chickens, ducks, lizards, fish, frogs.

Vertebral column

Made up of bones arranged from the base of the skull to the pelvis or tail. It houses the spinal cord, which is part of the central nervous system (along with the brain).

Invertebrates

Animals without a vertebral column.

Examples: Grasshoppers, ants, butterflies, millipedes, snails, worms.

Central nervous system in vertebrates

1. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and runs through the vertebral column.
2. The nervous system sends signals to different parts of the body through nerves, allowing coordination and response to stimuli.
