Government

A government is an organized body of persons who form the machinery of the state.

It is a system or an organization of ruling a country or a state.

It is a body of persons running matters of state. The matters of state are cared for by three joined bodies, which are:

  1. Executive
  2. Legislature
  3. Judiciary

All three joint bodies are called branches (organs) of the state authority.

Types of governments in the world

  1. Republic: A government headed by a president who holds executive powers. Example: Tanzania.
  2. Monarch: A government under the leadership of a king or queen, with a prime minister overseeing the daily operations of the government. Examples: United Kingdom, Japan.
  3. Dictatorship: A government led by a single person or a group of people who seize power by force.
  4. Federation: A form of government where authority is divided between a central government and individual units (states or provinces). Example: United States of America (USA).
  5. Democratic: A government in which people elect their leaders and actively participate in decision-making. Example: Tanzania.
  6. Union: A government formed when two or more independent states decide to unite and form a single governing body.
  7. Dominion: A government led by a prime minister while recognizing the British monarch as the head of state. Example: Canada.

  3. Enforce laws
  4. Promote national economy
  5. Make laws
  6. Maintain international relations
  7. Punish lawbreakers
  8. Regulate international trade
