First Aid for a Drowning Person

Overview: Drowning is a condition of suffocation and respiratory impairment caused by someone being submerged in or under water. This can occur when a person accidentally falls into deep water and cannot swim, or when a swimmer encounters obstacles in the water. During drowning, a person may inhale excessive amounts of water, causing the stomach and lungs to fill with water, preventing proper breathing. Immediate first aid is necessary to remove the water and restore breathing.

Key Considerations

1. Panic and Struggling: A drowning person is usually in a state of panic and may struggle to save themselves, potentially causing both the victim and the first aid provider to drown. Therefore, the first aid provider should be cautious and avoid direct contact.
2. Safety Measures: Use a piece of cloth or a rope to pull the drowning victim out of the water to avoid physical contact that could result in danger.

Procedure for Providing First Aid to a Drowning Person (Who Has Fainted)

1. Remove the Person from the Water: Quickly pull the victim out of the water to prevent further drowning.
2. Position the Victim: Lay the person on their back. Perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation: Strongly breathe air into the victim's mouth to clear water from the airways and lungs. (Ensure protection from possible disease transmission by using a clean cloth or material to separate the victim and provider.)
3. Clear the Airways: Tilt the victim's head sideways. Gently press the stomach up and down several times to expel the swallowed water.
4. Encourage Vomiting: Lift the victim slightly, tilting their head downward to encourage vomiting of the water.
5. Repeat the Process: Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 about 3 or 4 times, ensuring the victim's airways are cleared and breathing is restored.
6. Transport to Hospital: Once the victim begins breathing again, take them to the hospital for further medical evaluation.
