Eyes and Their Parts
The eyes are special organs that help us see and recognize things around us. They are located on the left and right sides of our face, and we have two of them. The muscles around our eyes help us move them up, down, and from side to side so we can look at different things.
Outer Parts of the Eye
- Eyebrows – These are the hairs above your eyes. They help keep sweat and dirt from falling into your eyes.
- Eyelashes – These are the small hairs on the edge of your eyelids. They protect your eyes by stopping dust and small particles from entering.
- Eyelids – These are the skin folds that cover and protect the eyes. They can close to protect the eye from bright light or dust, and they help keep the eyes moist.
Inner Parts of the Eye
- Pupil – This is the black circle in the center of the eye. The pupil lets light in, and its size changes depending on how much light there is. In bright light, the pupil gets smaller, and in low light, it gets larger.
- Iris – The iris is the colorful part of the eye. It controls the size of the pupil and how much light can enter the eye.
- Lens – The lens is behind the pupil and focuses light onto the retina. It helps us see clearly by focusing the light that comes into the eye.
- Retina – The retina is at the back of the eye. It captures the light and turns it into signals that are sent to the brain. The brain then processes these signals and creates the images we see.

Caring for the Eyes
It is important to care for our eyes to keep them healthy and ensure proper vision. Here are some ways we can take care of our eyes:
- Do not wear glasses without advice from an optician – Only wear glasses prescribed by an eye doctor to avoid harming your eyes.
- Read under enough light – Always make sure you have enough light when reading or doing close work to avoid straining your eyes.
- Clean your eyes regularly with clean water – Wash your eyes with clean water to remove dust or dirt and keep them fresh.
- Do not rub or clean your eyes with dirty hands or materials – Rubbing your eyes with dirty hands or cloths can transfer germs, causing eye infections.
