- Chautundu and Chokoraa
Read the following story and answer the questions that follow
Once upon a time, there were two naughty children who lived in Makuti Street. The girl was called Chautundu and the boy was called Chokoraa. These children were disobedient. They always caused trouble or got themselves into trouble. Their parents took a lot of pain to correct them. However, it was of no use. People said the children were troublesome because of their bad names. Chautundu and Chokoraa had all the bad manners you can think of. First, they were lazy. They refused to work, but they liked to eat a lot. They refused to go to school, but they liked the good life. They roamed about the streets picking old metal and empty plastic bottles. They sold them to get money.
Second, they were dirty. They neither bathed nor washed their clothes. Therefore, they had rashes all over their bodies. Their clothes smelled badly. Other children avoided playing with them.
Third, they were thieves. They stole money from their parents. They stole and ate food from the kitchen. They stole things from their home and sold them. They also stole fruits from other people's gardens.
Fourth, they were trouble makers. For instance, they enjoyed teasing dogs, stoning beehives, setting bushes on fire, and torturing animals.
In one of the incidents, they went to bully their neighbour's children. The poor children's parents were away for work. So, they were home alone.
Chautundu and Chokoraa forced them to play hide and seek inside their house. They started running all over the house. Chokoraa entered the bedroom. He found a pair of scissors inside the bedside drawer. He used it to cut the pillows to see what was inside. There were feathers in them. He scattered them in the bedroom. Suddenly, the parents arrived and found the house in a mess. When they went to the kitchen, they found Chautundu fixing a faulty electric cooker. When asked, she said she was an electrician. The neighbours caned and took them to their parents. It was after this incident that their parents could not bear with them anymore. Their father took them to a Children's Remand Home. He asked the warden to admit them until they were disciplined. Their parents have never visited them ever since.
