Translation Memory (TM)

A Translation Memory is a database that stores every sentence or phrase you have already translated. When the same or similar sentence appears again, the CAT tool automatically suggests the previous translation. This saves time and ensures consistency.

Example: If you translate "The machine must be switched off before cleaning" once, the tool will suggest this same translation whenever that sentence or a similar one appears in the document. You can accept the suggestion or modify it if needed.

Glossary

A glossary is a list of technical terms with their correct translations. It ensures that specialized vocabulary is translated consistently throughout the text.

Example from a medical text:

• vaccine → chanjo
• blood pressure → shinikizo la damu
• diabetes → kisukari

When these terms appear in your document, the CAT tool highlights them and provides the correct translation from your glossary.

The quality of translation depends primarily on the translator's skill, not the software itself.

1. Specialized terminology: Technical texts contain field-specific terms that require accurate translation. Using a glossary helps maintain consistency.

2. Sentence structure: Complex technical sentences (long sentences with multiple clauses) may need restructuring in the target language to preserve meaning.

3. Cultural differences: Some concepts in the source text may not exist or may be unfamiliar in the target culture. Adaptation is necessary for reader understanding.

Example: A text mentioning "bacon and eggs for breakfast" would need cultural adaptation for a Tanzanian audience, as this is not a common breakfast in Tanzania.

Step 1: Prepare your materials

• Gather the source text (English)
• Create or load a glossary with technical terms and their Kiswahili equivalents
• Ensure your translation memory is ready (if working on a previous project)

Step 2: Process the text through the CAT tool

• Import the source text into the CAT software
• The tool will identify matches from the translation memory
• The tool will highlight terms from your glossary

Step 3: Translate segment by segment

• Review each sentence or segment
• Accept memory matches or modify as needed
• Apply glossary terms for technical vocabulary

• Check for accuracy, consistency, and natural flow
• Ensure cultural appropriateness for the target audience

Technical Terms Identified:

• underground pipelines → mabomba ya chini ya ardhi

Using a Glossary: By entering these terms into your CAT tool's glossary, you ensure consistent translation throughout the document. When "solar-powered irrigation system" appears again in the text, the tool will automatically suggest "mfumo wa umwagiliaji unaotumia jua."

Translation Memory: Once you translate the full sentence, it is stored in the memory. If a similar sentence appears later (e.g., describing a different irrigation system), the tool will show a partial match, helping you translate faster.

In Tanzania, agricultural extension officers often need to translate farming manuals or health pamphlets from English to Kiswahili for local communities.
