Reading and Answering Questions from Arabic Texts
When you read an Arabic text, you must understand what it says and answer questions about it. The key skill is finding the correct information from the text and writing your answer clearly.
Step 1: Read the Whole Text First
Read the entire text carefully. Do not try to answer questions while reading for the first time.
Step 2: Read the Questions
After reading the text, read each question carefully. Look for keywords in the question.
Step 3: Find the Answer in the Text
Go back to the text and find the sentence that contains the answer. The answer is always in the text!
Step 4: Write Your Answer
Write your answer in a complete sentence. Use the same language as the question.
English meaning: One day, the pigeon felt hungry and thirsty, so she went out to find food and drink. While flying, she saw a sparrow in a cage hanging above a house. She approached him and said: "How sweet your life is, my dear! You have plenty of food and drink, you eat and drink as you wish." The sparrow said: "Yes, my friend, but I am sad because I lost what is better than food and more important than drink. I am a prisoner in a cage, deprived of freedom."
Now let's answer these questions:
Question 1: ماذا شعرت الحمامة؟ (What did the pigeon feel?)
Answer: شَعَرَتِ الْحَمَامَةُ بِالْجُوعِ وَالْعَطَشِ (The pigeon felt hungry and thirsty.)
Question 2: أين رأيت العصفور؟ (Where did she see the sparrow?)
Answer: رَأَتْ عَصْفُورًا فِي قَفَصٍ مُعَلَّقٍ فَوْقَ بَيْتٍ (She saw a sparrow in a cage hanging above a house.)
Question 3: هل كان العصفور سعيداً؟ (Was the sparrow happy?)
Answer: لَا، كَانَ حَزِينًا (No, he was sad.)
- Always read the whole text first before answering questions
- Look for key words in the question (who, what, where, when, why)
- The answer is always in the text — do not guess!
- Write your answer in Arabic, not in English
- Use complete sentences when answering
Try this text about Dar es Salaam:
Questions:
- ما اسم عاصمة تنزانيا الساحلية؟
- أين تقع دار السلام؟
- لماذا تُعتبر دار السلام مدينة كبيرة؟
Answers:
- دَارُالسَّلَامِ هِيَ الْعَاصِمَةُ السَّاحِلِيَّةُ
- تَقَعُ عَلَى السَّاحِلِ الشَّرْقِيِّ لِلْبَلَدِ عَلَى الْمُحِيطِ الْهِنْدِيِّ
- لأَنَّهَا أَكْبَرُ مَدِينَةٍ فِي تَنْزَانِيَا مِنْ حَيْثُ عَدَدُ السُّكَّانِ
In Tanzania, you will use reading comprehension skills every day. For example, when you go to the market in Dodoma or Arusha, you read price tags and product descriptions in Swahili, Arabic, or English. Being able to read and understand information and answer questions helps you make better decisions — like knowing the correct price of rice or maize, understanding bus schedules to travel to Mbeya, or following instructions on medicine packets from the pharmacy.
