Reading Simple Texts and Answering Simple Announcements
In this lesson, you will learn how to read simple Arabic texts and simple announcements, and then answer questions about them correctly. This is an important skill that helps you understand information in Arabic.
Step 1: Read the Text Carefully
When you see a text or announcement, read it slowly and carefully. Look at each word.
Step 2: Understand the Main Idea
Ask yourself: What is this text about? Who is it about? When and where does it happen?
Step 3: Read the Questions
Before answering, read each question carefully. Look for key words in the question that will help you find the answer in the text.
Step 4: Find the Answer in the Text
Go back to the text and find the part that answers each question. The answer is usually in the text!
Step 5: Write Your Answer
Write your answer clearly. You can answer with "نَعَمْ" (yes) or "لا" (no), or with a full sentence.
Here is a simple announcement from the textbook:
تُعلِنُ إِدارَةُ المَدرسَةِ عَنْ وُجودِ مُباراةٍ شَديدَةٍ لِكُرَةِ القَدمِ بَيْنَ فَريقَي الصَّفِّ الثّالِثِ وَفَريقِ الصَّفِّ الرّابِعِ، وَذَلِكَ في مَيدانِ المَدرسَةِ بُعَيْدَ صَلاةِ العَصرِ يَومَ الجُمُعَةِ.
Translation: The school administration announces there will be a football match between Class Three and Class Four in the school field after the Asr prayer on Friday.

Question 4: When will the match happen? Answer: After the Asr prayer on Friday (بُعَيْدَ صَلاةِ العَصرِ يَومَ الجُمُعَةِ)
When you answer yes/no questions, look at the text and decide if the statement is true or false.
Text: عَلِيٌّ تِلْمِيذٌ مُجْتَهِدٌ. يَنَامُ مُبَكِّرًا.
(Ali is a diligent student. He sleeps early.)
Question: هَلْ يَنَامُ عَلِيٌّ مُبَكِّرًا؟ (Does Ali sleep early?) Answer: نَعَمْ (Yes) — because the text says يَنَامُ مُبَكِّرًا
| Arabic | English |
|---|---|
| نَعَمْ | Yes |
| لا | No |
| سَؤالٌ | Question |
| إِجَابَةٌ | Answer |
| نَصٌّ | Text |
| تَعْلِيمٌ | Announcement |
| يَقْرَأُ | He/she reads |
| يَفْهَمُ | He/she understands |
- Always read the text twice before answering.
- Underline important information in the text.
- Match the question words with the text.
- Check your answer by reading the text again.
In Tanzania, you can use this skill when you see announcements at school, read notices at the market, or look at signs at the bus station. For example, if you see a notice at the duka saying "Maziwa ya TZS 2,000" (Milk for 2,000 shillings), you can read and understand the price, then tell your mother if she asks how much milk costs. This helps you get important information and make good decisions in your daily life.
