Here is a dialogue between a student and the library clerk at school:
(Good morning.)
(Good morning. What can I help you with?)
(The Arabic language books have arrived.)
(Great! Do you want to read it here or at home?)
(Can I read it at home?)
(No, you read it here in the library.)
(Thank you.)
(You're welcome.)
Your teacher may say these instructions in class:
- اِجْلِسْ (ijlis) = Sit down
- قُمْ (qum) = Stand up
- اِفْتَحِ الْكِتَابَ (iftah al-kitab) = Open the book
- أَغْلِقِ الْبَابَ (aghlid al-bab) = Close the door
- اسْتَمِعْ إِلَيَّ (istami' ilayya) = Listen to me
- رَدِّدْ مَعِي (karrid ma'i) = Repeat after me
- اكْتُبْ (uktub) = Write
- اِقْرَأْ (iqra') = Read
- خُذْ مَجْلِسَكَ (khudh majlasak) = Take your seat
Step 1: Listen Carefully
Pay full attention when the teacher speaks. Do not talk while the teacher is giving instructions.
Step 2: Understand the Meaning
If you hear a word you do not know, try to understand it from the context, or ask politely:
(What did you say?)
(Sorry, I did not understand)
Step 3: Act or Reply Correctly
After understanding, do what is asked. If someone asks you a question, answer politely.
Example Response
(Open the book at page five.)
(Yes, teacher.) — Then opens the book at page 5.
Practice this dialogue with a classmate:
Student 1: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ. (Peace be upon you.)
Student 2: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ. (And upon you peace. Who are you?)
Student 1: أَنَا عَلِيٌّ. (I am Ali. And you?)
Student 2: أَنَا فَاطِمَةُ. (I am Fatima. How are you?)
(Fine, thanks be to God. And you?)
Student 2: بِخَيْرٍ، شُكْراً. (Fine, thank you.)
- Always greet first when meeting someone: use
- Use شُكْراً (thank you) when someone helps you
- Use عَفْواً (you're welcome) when you help someone
- When you do not understand, ask politely:
- Follow instructions quickly and correctly
In Tanzanian primary schools, you use these listening and responding skills every day. For example, when you go to the school office to ask for a pen or to borrow a textbook, you greet the clerk with "صباح الخير", ask politely "هل عندك قلم؟" (Do you have a pen?), and then respond correctly to whatever instruction or answer they give you. This helps you communicate well and get what you need at school.
