Listening and Responding to Greetings, Invitations, Farewells, and Thanks
In this lesson, you will learn how to listen to and correctly respond to different types of spoken interactions in Arabic. These include:
- Greetings (salamu) — saying hello and responding
- Invitations (mwaliko) — offering or accepting something
- Farewells (kuagana) — saying goodbye
- Thanks (shukurani) — saying thank you and responding
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to take part in conversations that use these four types of expressions correctly.

Step 1: Listen Carefully
When someone greets you, pay attention to the exact words they use. Are they saying "صباح الخير" (good morning) or "السلام عليكم" (peace be upon you)?
Step 2: Match the Response
The response must match the type of greeting:
- If someone says "السلام عليكم" → you must say "وعليكم السلام"
- If someone says "صباح الخير" → you can say "صباح النور"
Step 3: Add Polite Expressions
It is polite to add:
- "وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ" (all praise be to God) when asked how you are
- "أَهْلاً وَسَهْلاً" (welcome) when greeting someone you know well
Here is a dialogue from your textbook. Study how the speakers respond to each other:
سالم: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ. (Salam: Peace be upon you.)
سعاد: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ. (Su'ad: And upon you peace.)
سالم: أَنا سالم. ما اسْمُكَ؟ (Salam: I am Salam. What is your name?)
سعاد: اسمي سعاد. كَيْفَ حَالُكَ؟ (Su'ad: My name is Su'ad. How are you?)
سالم: بِخَيْرٍ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ. وَكَيْفَ حَالُكَ أَنتَ؟ (Salam: Fine, all praise to God. And how are you?)
سعاد: بِخَيْرٍ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ. (Su'ad: Fine, all praise to God.)
Notice how each person responds correctly to the greeting and the question about their health.
فاطمة: هَلْ عِنْدَكِ قَلَمٌ؟ (Fatima: Do you have a pen?)
حبيبة: نَعَمْ، الْقَلَمُ وَاحِدٌ. تَفَضَّلِي، هَذَا هُوَ. (Habiba: Yes, there is one pen. Here you go, this is it.)
فاطمة: شُكْراً. (Fatima: Thank you.)
حبيبة: عَفْواً. (Habiba: You're welcome.)
When you practice, remember these rules:
- Greetings: Always respond with a matching greeting
- Health questions: Always say you are well and praise God
- Thanks: Always respond with "عَفْواً" (you're welcome)
- Goodbye: Always say goodbye politely when leaving
In Tanzania, you can use these Arabic expressions when you visit a shop, meet a neighbor, or talk to a teacher at school. For example, when you go to buy exercise books at a duka in your village, you might say "صباح الخير" to the shopkeeper, and when he gives you the change, you can say "شكراً" — and he will respond with "عفواً". These polite words help people in Tanzania show respect and friendliness in everyday conversations.
