Introducing Family Members and Friends
Here are the main words you need to know to talk about your family:
| English | Arabic (Male) | Arabic (Female) |
|---|---|---|
| Father | وَالِدِي | - |
| Mother | - | وَالِدَتِي |
| Uncle | عَمِّي | عَمَّتِي |
| Uncle (maternal) | خَالِي | خَالَتِي |
| Grandfather | جَدِّي | جَدَّتِي |
| Brother | أَخِي | أُخْتِي |
| Son | ابْنِي | ابْنَتِي |
Note: The word endings change when you are talking about two people (dual form). For example:
- وَالِدَانِ (two parents – male)
- وَالِدَتَانِ (two parents – female)
Use these patterns to introduce your family members:
Pattern 1: Introducing one person
This is my father. He is a teacher. هَذَا وَالِدِي، هُوَ مُدَرِّسٌ
This is my mother. She is a teacher. هَذِهِ وَالِدَتِي، هِيَ مُدَرِّسَةٌ
Pattern 2: Introducing two people
Who are these two? مَنْ هَذَانِ
These are my two brothers. They are students. هَذَانِ أَخَوَانِ، هُمَا طَالِبَانِ
Pattern 3: Using "who" (الَّذِي / الَّتِي)
Use الَّذِي for males and الَّتِي for females:
This is my sister who I love. هَذِهِ أُخْتِي الَّتِي أُحِبُّهَا
This is my father who works hard. هَذَا أَبِي الَّذِي يَعْمَلُ
Look at how to answer questions about your family:
Example 1:
Who is this? (asking about a male) مَنْ هَذَا
This is my uncle. He is a doctor. هَذَا عَمِّي، هُوَ طَبِيبٌ
Example 2:
Who is this? (asking about a female) مَنْ هَذِهِ
This is my aunt. She is a nurse. هَذِهِ خَالَتِي، هِيَ مُمَرِّضَةٌ
Example 3:
Who are these two? (dual masculine) مَنْ هَذَانِ
These are my two friends. They are engineers. هَذَانِ صَدِيقَانِ، هُمَا مُهَنْدِسَانِ
You can use these jobs when introducing family and friends:
| Occupation (Male) | Occupation (Female) |
|---|---|
| مُدَرِّسٌ (teacher) | مُدَرِّسَةٌ |
| طَبِيبٌ (doctor) | طَبِيبَةٌ |
| مُهَنْدِسٌ (engineer) | مُهَنْدِسَةٌ |
| مُحَامٍ (lawyer) | مُحَامِيَةٌ |
| مُمَرِّضٌ (nurse) | مُمَرِّضَةٌ |
| تَاجِرٌ (trader) | تَاجِرَةٌ |
| شُرْطِيٌّ (police officer) | شُرْطِيَّةٌ |
When introducing family members or friends in Arabic:
- Start with هَذَا (this is - male) or هَذِهِ (this is - female)
- Add the name or relationship (my father, my friend, etc.)
- Add the profession using هُوَ (he) or هِيَ (she)
- For two people, use هَذَانِ or هَاتَانِ
In Tanzania, you can use these Arabic phrases when meeting new people in your community or at school. For example, when a visitor comes to your home in Dar es Salaam, you can say "هَذَا وَالِدِي" (This is my father) and tell them he is a "تَاجِرٌ" (trader) at Kariakoo market. This helps you introduce your family politely and share what they do for a living.
