Introducing Yourself in Arabic
In this lesson, you will learn how to introduce yourself in Arabic using simple sentences. By the end, you will be able to say your name, tell where you are from, and answer basic questions about yourself.
First, learn these important Arabic pronouns (words that replace names):
| Arabic | English |
|---|---|
| أَنَا | I |
| أَنْتَ | you (male) |
| أَنْتِ | you (female) |
| هُوَ | he |
| هِيَ | she |
Here are the main phrases you need to introduce yourself:
Asking Someone's Name
- مَا اسْمُكَ؟ — What is your name? (to a male)
- مَا اسْمُكِ؟ — What is your name? (to a female)
Answering About Your Name
- اسْمِي ... — My name is ...
Asking Where Someone Is From
- مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ؟ — Where are you from? (male)
- مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتِ؟ — Where are you from? (female)
Answering About Your Origin
- أَنَا مِنْ ... — I am from ...
Asking If Someone Is a Student
- هَلْ أَنْتَ طَالِبٌ؟ — Are you a student? (male)
- هَلْ أَنْتِ طَالِبَةٌ؟ — Are you a student? (female)
Answering
- نَعَمْ، أَنَا طَالِبٌ / طَالِبَةٌ — Yes, I am a student.
- لَا، أَنَا لَسْتُ طَالِبًا / طَالِبَةً — No, I am not a student.
Here is a simple conversation between two students:
Student 1: مَا اسْمُكَ؟
(What is your name?)
Student 2: اسْمِي عُمَرُ. وَمَا اسْمُكَ؟
(My name is Umar. And what is your name?)
Student 1: اسْمِي سَلْمَى.
(My name is Salma.)
Student 1: مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ؟
(Where are you from?)
Student 2: أَنَا مِنْ دَارِ الْحِصَارِ. وَمِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتِ؟
(I am from Dar es Salaam. And where are you from?)
Student 1: أَنَا مِنْ مُونْدُوزِ.
(I am from Mwanza.)
Student 1: هَلْ أَنْتَ طَالِبٌ؟
(Are you a student?)
Student 2: نَعَمْ، أَنَا طَالِبٌ.
(Yes, I am a student.)
- Say hello: أَهْلًا (Hello)
- Give your name: اسْمِي ...
- Say where you are from: أَنَا مِنْ ...
- Say you are a student: أَنَا طَالِبٌ / طَالِبَةٌ
- Use طَالِبٌ for a male student
- Use طَالِبَةٌ for a female student
- The phrase وَ means "and"
- The phrase أَيْضًا means "also" or "too"
Try to complete these sentences:
- اسْمِي ___________ (your name)
- أَنَا مِنْ ___________ (your town or village)
- هَلْ أَنْتَ طَالِبٌ؟ → نَعَمْ، ___________
In Tanzania, you can use these phrases when you meet new friends at school, at the market in Kariakoo, or when visiting relatives in another town. For example, when a new student joins your class, you can say "أَهْلًا! اسْمِي فَاطِمَةُ. أَنَا مِنْ أَرُوشَ" to make a new friend feel welcome and get to know them.
