Identifying Actions Done at Home
In this topic, we learn to identify and name various actions (vitendo) that happen inside the home. In Arabic, actions are called أَفْعَال (af'aal - verbs). Being able to name and recognize home actions helps us talk about what we do every day.
Here are important verbs that describe actions done at home:
| English | Arabic (Past) | Arabic (Present/Future) |
|---|---|---|
| I slept | نِمْتُ (nimtu) | أَنَامُ (anaamu) |
| I woke up | اسْتَيْقَظْتُ (istayqadtu) | أَسْتَيْقِظُ (istayqizu) |
| I cleaned | نَظَّفْتُ (nazzaftu) | أُنَظِّفُ (unazzifu) |
| I swept | كَنَسْتُ (kanastu) | أَكْنُسُ (aknusu) |
| I washed | غَسَلْتُ (ghasaltu) | أَغْسِلُ (aghsilu) |
| I cooked | طَبَخْتُ (tabakhtu) | أَطْبَخُ (utbakhu) |
| I ate | أَكَلْتُ (akaltu) | آكُلُ (aakulu) |
| I drank | شَرِبْتُ (sharibtu) | أَشْرَبُ (ashrabu) |
| I bathed | اسْتَحْمَمْتُ (istahammamtu) | أَسْتَحِمُّ (istahimmu) |
| I entered | دَخَلْتُ (dakhaltu) | أَدْخَلُ (udkhilu) |
| I opened | فَتَحْتُ (fatakhtu) | أَفْتَحُ (uftahi) |
| I read | قَرَأْتُ (qara'tu) | أَقْرَأُ (aqra'u) |
| I watched | شَاهَدْتُ (shahadtu) | أُشَاهِدُ (ushahidu) |
In Arabic, the subject pronoun is often attached to the verb. Here are the singular pronouns:
| Pronoun | Meaning |
|---|---|
| أَنَا (anaa) | I |
| أَنْتَ (anta) | you (male) |
| أَنْتِ (anti) | you (female) |
| هُوَ (huwa) | he |
| هِيَ (hiya) | she |
Example with the verb "to eat" (أَكَلَ - akala)
| Pronoun | Past Tense | Present Tense |
|---|---|---|
| أَنَا | أَكَلْتُ | آكُلُ |
| أَنْتَ | أَكَلْتَ | تَأْكُلُ |
| أَنْتِ | أَكَلْتِ | تَأْكُلِينَ |
| هُوَ | أَكَلَ | يَأْكُلُ |
| هِيَ | أَكَلَتْ | تَأْكُلُ |
Exercise 1: Match the action to the picture
Look at each picture and write the correct verb:
- دَخَلَتْ (entered)
- طَبَخَتْ (cooked)
- أَكَلَتْ (ate)
- نَظَّفَتْ (cleaned)
Exercise 2: Fill in the blank
Choose the correct verb from the box:
[كَنَسْتُ - أَكَلْتُ - شَرِبْتُ - نِمْتُ]
- أَنَا __________ اللَّحْمَ. (I ate the meat.)
- أَنَا __________ فِي السَّرِيرِ. (I slept in the bed.)
- أَنَا __________ الْمَاءَ. (I drank water.)
- أَنَا __________ الْبَيْتَ. (I swept the house.)
- الأَفْعَال (af'aal) are action words called verbs.
- Verbs change based on who is doing the action (pronouns).
- The past tense tells about actions already done.
- The present/future tense tells about actions happening now or in the future.
- Home actions include cleaning, cooking, eating, sleeping, and many more.
In Tanzania, knowing how to name home actions in Arabic is useful when you visit a Swahili-speaking household or when learning Arabic for religious purposes. For example, if you help your mother in the kitchen, you can say "أَنَا أُطْبَخُ" (I am cooking) or "أَنَا أَغْسِلُ الْأَطْبَاقَ" (I am washing the dishes), practicing Arabic verbs while doing daily chores at home.
