Arabic Letters Have Different Forms in Words
In Arabic, letters change their shape depending on where they appear in a word. A letter looks different when it is at the beginning of a word, in the middle, at the end, or when it stands alone. This is why we must learn the four forms of each Arabic letter.
The Four Forms of Arabic Letters
| Position in Word | Form Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Alone | Isolated (منفردة) | Letter written by itself |
| Beginning | Initial (مبتدأة) | Letter at the start of the word |
| Middle | Medial (متوسطة) | Letter between two other letters |
| End | Final (منتهية) | Letter at the end of the word |
Example: The Letter Bā (ب)
Look at how the letter Bā (ب) changes in these words:
- بُ (bu) – isolated form
- بَ (ba) – initial form (beginning)
- ـَبـ – medial form (middle)
- ـبٌ (bun) – final form (end)
Practice: Writing Letters in Words
Let us write the letter Rā (ر) in different positions:
- رَمَضَاءُ – The Rā (ر) is at the beginning (initial form)
- جَبَرَ – The Rā (ر) is at the end (final form)
- فَرْدٌ – The Rā (ر) is at the end with a sukūn (final form)
Another Example: The Letter Nūn (ن)
- نَوْرٌ – Nūn at the beginning (initial)
- مَنْبَرٌ – Nūn in the middle (medial)
- ثَوْرٌ – Nūn at the end (final)
Steps to Write Letters Correctly
- Identify the position – Is the letter at the beginning, middle, end, or alone?
- Choose the correct form – Remember which shape to use for that position
- Add the vowel marks – Put fatha (َ), kasra (ِ), or damma (ُ) above or below the letter
- Check your writing – Make sure the letter connects properly to neighboring letters
Practice Exercise
Write the correct form of the letter in brackets:
- ذَهَبَ الطِّفلُ إِلَى الْمَدرَسَةِ → The letter (ف) in "الطِّفلُ" is in the middle position
- كِتَابٌ → The letter (ك) at the beginning has the form كَ
Real-life application
In Tanzania, you will use this skill when reading and writing Arabic words in daily life. For example, when writing receipts or keeping records in a small shop in Arusha or Dar es Salaam, you may need to write Arabic words like "بِسْمِ اللهِ" (Bismillah) or "الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ" (Al-hamdulillah). Knowing how to form letters correctly at the beginning, middle, and end of words helps you write neatly and be understood clearly.
