From Written Texts

When reading stories, articles, or textbooks, identify unfamiliar words and use a dictionary to understand their meanings.

Example text words: cultivate, heritage, sustainable, innovation, traditions

Before constructing sentences, know what type of word you are using:

• Nouns — name a person, place, thing, or idea
• Verbs — show action or state of being
• Adjectives — describe or modify nouns (answer "what kind?")
• Adverbs — describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs

A correct sentence needs:

1. A subject — who or what the sentence is about
2. A verb — the action or state
3. Correct word order — Subject + Verb + Object

Worked Example Using New Vocabulary

New word learned: bargain (a discussion to reach agreement on price)

Step 1: Identify the word type — bargain is both a noun and a verb

Step 2: Construct sentences

• Noun use: "The market vendor offered a fair bargain on the fresh mangoes."
• Verb use: "Mary learned to bargain with traders at the Kariakoo market."

Another new word: sustainable (able to continue over time)

• Adjective use: "Tanzania is developing sustainable farming practices to protect the land."

When reading a text, follow these steps:

1. Read the passage carefully
2. Identify unfamiliar words
3. Look up meanings in a dictionary
4. Read the word in context
5. Create sentences using those words

Example from a Written Text

Text passage: "The farmers in Morogoro use sustainable methods to grow vegetables."

New vocabulary: sustainable, methods, vegetables

Constructed sentences:

1. "Sustainable agriculture helps protect our environment."
2. "My grandmother teaches traditional farming methods."
3. "Tanzanian farmers grow vegetables like tomatoes and onions."

When participating in or listening to a dialogue:

1. Pay attention to new words used in conversation
2. Notice how speakers use those words
3. Practice using the same words in your own sentences

Example Dialogue

Conversation: Two students discussing a school project

New word: demonstrate

Student A: "How can we demonstrate our findings?" Student B: "We can demonstrate by showing the experiment to the class."

Your sentence using demonstrate: "The science club will demonstrate how solar panels work during the exhibition."

• Word order errors: "The teacher gave to us books" → Correct: "The teacher gave us books"
• Missing verbs: "She happy today" → Correct: "She is happy today"
• Wrong word usage: "The weather is tasty" → Correct: "The weather is pleasant"

• Have I learned new words from conversation or text?
• Do I understand the meaning of each new word?
• Do I know what type of word it is (noun, verb, adjective)?
• Does my sentence have a subject and verb?
• Is the word order correct?

In daily life in Tanzania, you will often need to construct sentences using new vocabulary when shopping at local markets, speaking with elders, or writing assignments. For example, when you visit the Mbeya fruit markets, you might say: "I want to buy these mangoes at a fair price — can we bargain?" This uses vocabulary learned from conversations and helps you communicate effectively in real situations.
