Reading Simple Instructions and Responding in Chinese
When we read or hear a single word instruction in Chinese, we need to understand what it means and respond appropriately using simple vocabulary we already know.
Here are important single-word instructions you will learn in this chapter:
| Chinese | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 干 | gàn | do / make |
| 快 | kuài | quickly / fast |
| 交 | jiāo | submit / hand in |
| 喝 | hē | drink |
| 走 | zǒu | go / walk |

| 班长 | bānzhǎng | class leader |
When the class leader (班长 bānzhǎng) gives instructions, we need to understand and respond.

To respond, we can say: 好 (hǎo) — Okay!
Example 2:

We also receive instructions from family members at home.

Look at the following single-word instructions and match them with their meanings:

| 快写作业 (Write homework quickly) | 好 (Okay) |

In everyday life in Tanzania, when a Chinese-speaking shopkeeper at a market in Dar es Salaam says 快 (kuài – quickly) or 交钱 (jiāo qián – pay money), you can respond simply with 好 (hǎo – okay) or use simple vocabulary you have learned. For example, if you buy mandazi for 500 TZS and the seller says 交钱, you can respond confidently while learning basic Chinese instructions used in local markets and shops.
