Reading Words and Understanding Their Meaning
When we read Chinese words, we must not only pronounce them correctly but also understand what they mean. This is the skill of kusoma maneno na kuelewa maana iliyokusudiwa — reading words and understanding the intended meaning.
In this lesson, you will learn to:
- Read Chinese words (in both characters and pinyin)
- Understand what each word means
- Use context to understand the full meaning of sentences
Here are important words you must know how to read and understand:
| Chinese | Pinyin | Swahili Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 新 | xīn | mpya (new) |
| 学习 | xuéxí | kujifunza (to study/learn) |
| 谁 | shéi | nani (who) |
| 大家 | dàjiā | wote (everyone) |
| 唱歌 | chànggē | kuimba (to sing) |
| 会 | huì | weza (can/be able to) |
| 谁的 | shéi de | -a nani (whose) |
| 老师 | lǎoshī | mwalimu (teacher) |
| 书 | shū | kitabu (book) |
| 本子 | běnzi | daftari (notebook) |
Step 1: Read the Pinyin
Look at how the word is pronounced. For example, chànggē is pronounced "chang-ge."
Step 2: Know the Meaning
Remember what each word means. Chànggē means "to sing" or "singing."
Step 3: Use Context
The meaning becomes clearer when you see the word in a sentence. Look at this example from your textbook:
A: 这是谁的书? Zhè shì shéi de shū? (This is whose book?)
B: 这是老师的书。 Zhè shì lǎoshī de shū. (This is the teacher's book.)
Even if you don't know every word, you can understand from the context that 谁的 (shéi de) means "whose" because the question asks about ownership.
Example 1: Understanding from Dialogue
Look at this conversation from your textbook:
Teacher: 小王,你的爱好是什么? Xiǎowáng, nǐ de àihào shì shénme? (Xiao Wang, what is your hobby?)
Xiao Wang: 我的爱好是唱歌。 Wǒ de àihào shì chànggē. (My hobby is singing.)
Understanding the meaning:
- 爱好 (àihào) means "hobby"
- 唱歌 (chànggē) means "to sing"
- From the context, we understand that Xiao Wang's hobby is singing
Example 2: Answering Questions
Look at exercise question 1 from your textbook:
Xiǎowáng huì zuò shénme? (What can Xiao Wang do?)
From the dialogue, we know Xiao Wang said "我的爱好是唱歌" (My hobby is singing). Therefore, the answer is B. 唱歌 (chànggē).
Example 3: Understanding "谁的" (Whose)
The pattern 谁的 + noun asks about ownership:
- 谁的书?= Whose book?
- 谁的车?= Whose car?
- 谁的本子?= Whose notebook?
When someone answers with X的 (X de), they are saying "it belongs to X":
- 老师的书 = the teacher's book
- 玛丽的车 = Mary's car
When you read Chinese, follow these steps:
- Read the pinyin aloud — sound out each syllable carefully
- Recall the meaning — remember what the word means in Swahili
- Look at the context — see how the word is used in the sentence
- Answer the question — make sure your answer makes sense
- Reading words means pronouncing them correctly using pinyin
- Understanding meaning means knowing what the word means in Swahili
- Context helps you understand when a word has multiple meanings
- The pattern 谁的 asks "whose" and X的 shows ownership
In Tanzania, you might use this skill when interacting with Chinese tourists or businesspeople visiting markets like Msasani or Kariakoo. If a Chinese visitor points to something and asks "这是谁的书?" (Whose book is this?), you can understand they are asking about ownership and respond appropriately. This skill also helps when reading simple Chinese labels on products or when learning Chinese through apps that teach vocabulary for everyday situations.
