Reading Two-Syllable Words
A syllable is a part of a word that has one sound when we say it. Every syllable has one vowel sound. When we clap while saying a word, we clap once for each syllable.
Examples
- Cat has 1 syllable (cat)
- Mango has 2 syllables (man-go)
- Carrot has 2 syllables (car-rot)
When you see a two-syllable word, break it into two parts. Read each part separately, then put them together.
Steps to Follow
- Look at the word and find the two parts.
- Say the first part clearly.
- Say the second part clearly.
- Join both parts and read the whole word.
Here are two-syllable words from your textbook. Read them aloud:
| Word | First part | Second part |
|---|---|---|
| mango | man | go |
| carrot | car | rot |
| orange | o | range |
| pencil | pen | cil |
| rabbit | rab | bit |
| window | win | dow |
| Monday | Mon | day |
| baby | ba | by |
| woman | wo | man |
- Each syllable has one vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
- Words ending with -ly usually have two syllables: soft-ly.
- Words with double consonants often split in the middle: cab-bage.
Read these words slowly, one syllable at a time:
- carpet → car-pet
- table → ta-ble
- flower → flow-er
- water → wa-ter
- happy → hap-py
- open → o-pen
When you go to the market with your parent, you will see many two-syllable words on the signs and packets. For example, the sign for "Mangoes" or "Oranges" uses two-syllable words. Being able to read these words helps you know what items are for sale and helps you shop correctly.
