Understanding Figurative and Idiomatic Language

When we read or listen to English, we often come across expressions that do not mean exactly what the words say. These are called figurative language and idiomatic expressions. Understanding them helps us get the real meaning behind the words.

An idiom is a phrase where the words together have a meaning that is different from the dictionary meaning of each individual word.

Examples

  • "It's raining cats and dogs" – This does not mean animals are falling from the sky! It means it is raining very heavily.
  • "Break a leg" – This is said to wish someone good luck, especially before a performance.
  • "The ball is in your court" – This means it is now your turn to make a decision or take action.
